Comment:
Dreyfus is the legend, period. The problem is that he is passed his time, and this unfortunately makes his lectures ineffective. This is not his fault, but can be an issue for some. The GSI's lecture in his place. The class is just a lot of reading, and papers. Wished I could have had his ideas come from him directly, but that's life.

Although a bit of a celebrity, I'd have to honestly say his age is showing; he forgets things often, is hard of hearing, and thusly his class is quite hard to follow. He's a genuinely nice and good person, but definitely not the best class to take for its lack of clarity. GSIs are helpful and understandable though.

Dreyfus isn't famous for no reason - he's brilliant, even if he loses his train of thought sometimes, and very open to student discussion, even when we disagreed with him. It was a seminar so it's easy no matter what, but Dreyfus is always available to help and encourages coming to office hours.

Phil 7 is an incredible class! Professor Dreyfus really has a passion for teaching and he knows what he is talking about. He has dedicated his life to this stuff. It's a little hard to keep up w/ lectures, but listen and pay attention and you'll figure it out. makes you think

Best professor I've had at Berkeley. Very accessible in office hours. Take his class even if you are not a philosophy student. Highly recommended. And a great, thoughtful person too.

This is seriously the worst class i've ever taken! The professor is extremely closed minded and boring. I would NOT recommend this class to anyone.

Professor Dreyfus is one of my all-time favorite profs who really listens to students' questions and observations using them to bring out another aspect of what he's teaching. VERY accessible and a real heavyweight in his field.

Professor Dreyfus was not the most interesting lecturer and professor I have encountered, but what he has to say and the content of what he says is extremely interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed the course, even if it was hard to decipher the points he was making. My GSI was very helpful. Class grade is of 3 papers (3-5 pages).

This class gave me a different way of thinking about these types of texts; definitely useful. Dreyfus is hard to understand, but it's worthwhile to listen and try to decipher what he is saying. He's nice and accessible. I recommend a class with Prof. Dreyfus, although be prepared to work if you really want to understand his points.

So few people showed up to lecture that Dreyfus made a sign in sheet just to get his students to come to class. Even then people would sign in for friends so they didn't have to go. Material is not hard, and it's easy to get a good grade (3 essays no final), but the class itself is quite boring. Literally everybody but the front row would be asleep

i do not understand why many people love this class. the arguments, if they can be called arguments at all, made by Heidegger are at first unclear. after you get a grasp of them, they are indeed very simple ideas---it's a puzzle to me Dreyfus seems to be amazed by what Heidegger writes. he treats it like a bible.

Dreyfus is cool, as is Heidegger. The only problem is Heidegger is hard enough to understand without being taught Heideggerianly. Definitely use the supplementary reading. Lectures are fun but confusing as all heck.

Adorable old man! the professor in Futurama is modeled after him because the creator is a Berkeley grad! interesting, opinionated lectures. you don't need to pay full attention though, bring laptop for class.(you don't need to go tho cuz class is 10% participation, 3 essays of 30% each on the books you read.) a mellow, but thought-provoking class.

Sparknotes and webcast made this class easy. It's only essays based on the readings, making it a pretty easy load. If you get a n easy GSI you are set.

Prof Dreyfus is brilliant. I hope that his podcasts remain long after he retires. His enthusiasm is so captivating. This is what a teacher should do--get students excited about a topic! yes he is opinionated but he is VERY VERY open to disagreements and he will allow you to express them, and will treat them with respect...he is a TREASURE...
