this is considered the "boot camp" of the history major. you really have to work for it and stay on top of all readings and assignments. the final is given during midterms and it was very fair (got an A- on it), the second half is dedicated to your research paper.

Lectures are so boring, and he thinks he's funny. Online homework is easy and he assigns quite a few readings. He went on trips a lot and every substitute we had was better than him and explained things better than he did.

Great Professor, He starts off the semester by introducing his student to the Cornell note taking form, which is actually very helpful when taking notes in a lecture class. Gives 3 exams each weight differently throughout the semester, easy online quizzes & has you read 2 books, very helpful professor truly wants students to get an A in course.

uses powerpoints but only have 3 words on them. boring lectures, laughs to himself, stutters every three words. expects you to be at his intelligence level.

Intelligent, but expects his students intelligence to be comparable to his. Cocky and arrogant, tough grader, has slides with no notes, and doesn't go into detail about main points. Overall, doesn't really "teach" much, just likes to hear himself talk in an intelligent manner.

Worst teacher I've ever had. Completely a know it all and loves making that known. Expects you to know the info without putting anything on slides. Will give him that you can use notes for tests but yet you take notes just from him talking so its not much help Strongly don't recommend. Told me to look up guidelines when emailing him.. AWFUL!!!!!

Dr. Rice is a nice guy! If you pay attention in class, take notes, and do your work then you will do fine! He is very organized so you will never be confused about assignments. His lectures to me were very boring at times.

I am taking my second class with Rice this semester, and would take 100 more if I could! He is always extremely helpful both inside and out of class. Expects you to work for your grade, but this is college! Also took 285 with him and he greatly improved my writing abilities.

I learned more from his class then any other class I've ever taken in college. That being said, he's a little unrealistic in his expectations. He assumes everyone is an honors student. I put more work into his class then all the rest of my classes combined, by far, and it's still the only thing that kept me from making the dean's list.

He loves his opinions and the sound of his own voice. He is extremely boring and arrogant. I've learned useful skills, but I've always learned a lot about this narcissistic professor.

Dr. Rice is a great guy and is a great prof. If you take his class be prepared to read. Of the seven textbooks that I bought or this class, I read each of them cover to cover and every class is a discussion on the previous days reading. Your grade depends on your participation so reading is a must. There are also three papers based on the readings, each avg. in length of 5-10 pages with a final paper of a min. of 15 pages. I've never learned more in a class ever. Great professor.

Very nice guy, but the class is way to hard. 15 quizzes a year, 3 essays, 3 exams, homework every friday, and you must participate in the friday classes! A very hard class for a 100 level course but he is a nice guy.

Dr. Rice really challenges you to participate in class discussions. If you read, participate in discussions, and do research ON TIME then you should do fine in his class. Good teacher to take if you want an 'upper level' history experience, to understand the standards that will be expected of you.

worst teacher I have ever had. His class was so boring, powerpoints with no notes, based upon his lecture. studders about literally 20 times in one class period. so cocky because he is a "doctor". very hard grader and the discussions were also a pain to go to. do NOT take a class with him if you do not have to

He will make you work really hard for your grade, but if you do it, you will be rewarded for it. He will force you to contribute to class discussions, but this is only to help. His courses provide a very different perspective on what we think are ordinary things. Sometimes he doesn't clearly explain what he expects, but just keep asking.

I would never suggest taking a class with him. He never clearly states what he is asking you to do and then doesnt comment on what you did wrong. I am a history majoy and Ive had all of them at least once. He arrogant, cocky, and stuck up. He makes me want to change my major and I have 2 more classes to finish before I graduate. Avoid if possible!!
