Professor O'Leary want you to really learn and improve your writing. show interest and always seek help to succeed in his class. He is willing to help and will appreciate your efforts by giving you good grades. Don't be late or leave his class early and don't use your phone in class. I did all of this and got an easy A in his class.

I guarantee he will make you a better writer but you have to give up trying to be the cool kid in class. He is always willing to help you during office hours and responds fairly quickly to emails. Don't skip, revise your essays early and do your rough drafts and you'll pass. I am not fond of writing but I'm looking forward to 1102 with O'Leary.

This professor makes you want to get into the classroom, bring a blanket, and fall asleep. Occasionally he is funny but miss class and this will get you no credit from the assignment from that day. Went to him for extra credit opportunities and outside of class, still received a C. He's cool people though.

Professor O'Leary is a straightforward teacher. If you show up to class do the assignments and participate in the discussion you will pass. If you have some sort of learning disability, you may not pass. E.H.

He spent the entire class time talking and still made no sense when he gave assignments and gave hardly any feedback himself in class until after he graded the final drafts and even then it wasn't helpful.

Just don't take a class with him. He would tell you to do something a specific way and when you turn in your assignment he would say that is not correct

Professor O'Leary is hands down the worst professor i've had at SF. ENC1101 is a ridiculously easy english class, but if you're not his favorite, it is very evident in your grade. I do not recommend taking this class at all.

Class time is spent "lecturing" by which I mean slowly reading from the textbook word for word. At the beginning of the semester I got the flu 2 days after having surgery. Not only were my absences not excused I wasn't even allowed to make up the work I missed. One day he fell asleep while I was presenting a project to the class. These are facts.

O'Leary tries. He's very passionate about the subject that he teaches and I can respect that but I would not recommend taking his class. He often teaches assignments after he's finished grading them, often publicly calling out students for doing poorly which I personally find very rude. He's quite egocentric and lacks empathy. Not my favorite.

Mr. O'Leary is an extremely tough grader when it comes to grammar, and he stated that loud and clear from the beginning of the semester. He's very monotoned, which is mentally killing, but does really care about your improvement and success. He talks about current events and politics a lot, so if you have strong views about that, stay away from him

READ: Everyone giving him such harsh reviews is disheartening. Jay just expects you to try your best. He is awesome and so helpful. I stayed after class to ask him questions on my essays many times, and he was more than glad to give me feedback and suggestions. I got an A easy. Such a sweet guy and he genuinely cares about his students. Take him!

Prof. O'Leary taught me what I needed to learn, but I'm glad I'm out of his class. I have never met someone with such enthusiasm for English in such a noncontagious way. He grades hard on grammar (which he doesn't teach), thesis and topic sentences, and he prefers brevity. He came across as bristly a few times, but he's a genuinely nice guy.

Jay is old school for sure and does not play games when it comes to work. This is how college should be but he needs to learn to relate to the students and their learning needs. He is very rude at times and mentions politics a lot. (Clinton fan) get ready to read about liberal crap like feminism and racism. Do not leave early or he gets offended.

He expects you to be responsible; which means he expects you to turn work in on time, show up to class, post to the discussions, and use proper grammar. The course work and guidelines that Santa Fe has setup, requires these things of you to pass. All of his students including myself should say thank you for high expectations and "tough grading".

A super nice guy, but if you don't want to learn anything or try then this is isn't the class for you. You only have 3 essays for the semester, which means not to much writing but, if you don't do well on one of them your grade is screwed because those essays are 80% of your grade. The reading is hard material, but he helps you understand in class.

What ever you do. Don't take this a class with this guy. Horrible at explaining things. He is arguably the worst lecturer in the world. In my opinion spending an entire week without sleep and food would be more exciting then taking this class. Please what ever you do don't take this class. Even if it means waiting a semester.
