Comment:

Joel is without a doubt the nicest person on campus. Loves to tell stories, is insanely passionate about all things music, and loves to strike up a conversation whenever and wherever. He owns a great bass recorder (it's a thing, look it up) and showed it off in class. I'd take every class with him if I could.

Joel is like the grandpa of the music department. Everyone seems to love him, and he'll offer to help you even after you've finished his class- he said I could come and ask him about French diction for a song I'm learning. I'd definitely go out of my way to look up classes he's teaching so I can take a class with him again.

I have taken Symphonic Band over and over and over again, that's how much I love Evans. Going to any of his classes is like a break from college for an hour and a half. He talks about his travels a lot and he's a jolly man. I don't have anything bad to say about him.

Comment:

Kinda like Santa with the jolly laugh, the big smile, white beard, and always knows all the gossip about all the music majors. Very passionate about his job and music. If you have to take a GE, or just want to take a music class, take it with Joel. He will keep you interested all semester long.

I took Music Cultures as a GE and it was definitely more interesting compared to McCann's World of Music class. Very nice guy who is passionate about music & about life. At times class dragged on, but there wasn't much work. The 2 tests involve studying in order to do well, yet the final paper is simple. He lacks clarity with his assignments.

Joel is possibly my favorite teacher on campus. I took music cultures of the world as a GE, and was surprised when he actually made the class both enjoyable and interesting. He's a wonderful professor who's both knowledgeable and cares about his students. Everyone should take at least one of his classes once.

Best professor at SUNY New Paltz. The most knowledgeable professor in his field compared to any other professor on campus and whatever they teach. Has a clear, noticeable passion for music and LOVES to share it. I am a comp sci major but Symphonic Band is undoubtedly my favorite class because of Joel. Kinda reminds me of Santa

Most amazing professor I have ever had!!! He is so excited about all of the classes he teaches. I had him for 3 different classes and I wish he had taught more at this school. I recommend taking any class he teaches, and then taking them again just to be able to watch this amazing man doing what he loves!

I took his class to fill a GenEd Req. Easy to talk to if youre having difficulty. Brilliant man who knows his stuff, loves romance + sings to us daily. He has a passion for life and experiencing it. Tells us awesome stories about composers that make them human instead of names on dusty compositions. I appreciate classical music because of him.

A fantastic teacher. I was really intimidated by playing guitar but he made the class really comfortable, and easy to keep going, and kept you from becoming frustrated, which easily happens when one is learning a new instrument.

boring as hell unless you like going to church a lot and watching videos of castrated men in tights with sackbuts. if u are jewish, u will be offended, if u like getting A's, u wont. it's worth sitting thru for the easy grade as long as u study.
