Take Dr. Torres class If you're really ready to improve your writing skills. He grades papers harshly but gives feedback that you need to be a better writer. He is willing to work with you and understands when life happens, will often give an extension to assignments. He looks at your improvement throughout the semester.

He gives you the grade you deserve, and he doesn't sugar coat it. You'll never become a better writer if you can't take rejection and learn from your mistakes. Yes, he will tear your paper apart, but he does that not to tell you that you suck but help you get better. And in the real writing world, editors won't be so nice.

Took this class as a general education requirement. He is the most opinionated professor I have ever met, if you don't write about his interests you will get a poor grade. Doesn't teach his classes just goes off topic however, if you don't attend class you will get a bad grade. Beware of pop quizzes there is no warning. Good luck.

Took many classes with him, and I still don't know how to feel about him. A very insightful and kind professor, yet opinionated. He won't take late assignments though; I learned it the hard way. He will make you a better writer and reader if you can follow all the instructions.

Here's the deal: Torres is ALL about himself. He's got some huge opinions and he's not afraid to let you know about them. That being said, a lot of students are intimidated by him. The trick to his classes? Don't be afraid to have your own opinion. People with big opinions love a challenge and he will respect you for giving him some good debate.

Requires a lot of reading and then rarely discusses the books in class. But there are pop quizzes so you need to read to pass. Two essays, but they were a lot of work. Not available to help with essays during office hours (practically ever other English professor is). Hard grader. I got an A-, and I still have no idea how.

I read these reviews and just see students who have a high opinion of their work. I took the class this semester for flash fiction and never got below a B. Just don't go walking into class like you're the next Hemingway. Learn from the criticisms. He's very easy to talk to and his class is the only one I actually talked in and gave my own views.

Very difficult to please. It's a fiction writing course, yet there were tons of restrictions. "Don't start your story with a car crash" was just one of many things he told us not to do. He didn't like my first story, which I wrote to be insightful about appreciating life. When I wrote a new story, apparently part of the idea was similar to some random movie he had seen. Regardless of my constant effort, he gave me a B. Write about his personal interests and you'll get an A.

Don't take a class with him unless you want to hear about how awful white people are and how great the Yankees are. I hate this man and cannot believe I had to take more than one class with him. Don't do it if you can avoid it!!

Dr. Torres really wants to help his students learn and become better writers. He's a good guy-really fun at times, and an understanding teacher. However, his class was VERY repetitive and boring-we learned everything we were going to learn in the first two weeks, then not much after that. Also, as everyone said he is a VERY hard grader.

Torres is the most bias teacher in the English department. He has high standards and only rewards those who meet those standards not helping those that may need help. The average grade is a C. If you take writing with him, expect your pieces to be ripped apart and then awarded a low grade. Avoid this professor at all cost.

Torres is a GREAT teacher...although he does teach lower level classes, he really is more helpful for upperclassmen. Hard grader like some people say..but hes just truthful, if you write a C paper...your going to get a C!! Ive had him in four different classe and every class I feel I have learned a lot about who I am and my education.

This class at first seemed very interesting, but as time passed it slowly plateaued. It was hard to please when dealing with his grading. This class should be an upper level not a 271.

He seems okay at first..reading assignments every night, discussion in following class. TAKE GOOD NOTES. 6 response papers, midterm, final, participation grade (IMPORTANT THAT YOU PARTICIPATE). Digresses, talks about random things: racism, puerto rico, tyra banks. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. too much work for 200level, VERY HARD GRADER!!will kill GPA!

He is a difficult teacher, and obviously bias. I felt like the main focus of this class was to say over and over again how **** all white people are. He is a tough grader, and this class had an overwhelming amount of work in it. Although he was so hard, he improved my writing because he graded so tough.

he does sound off on his own opinions, but the fact is, he is using silent time...he will try to engage students in any conversation rather than none. Yet it does seem at times he could steer the class in a more assignment-oriented vien and push people to talk about writing, rather than just start about whatever is on his mind...

Torres-padilla can be a very difficult teacher. If you write an average paper, he gives you a C, when most teachers would give you an A. He makes you work for your grade. He is an amazing teacher though. He helps you think more critically about the literature and he challenges you to make opinions about what you've read. He was an amazing professor. Some of these people here are full of it. I'm not "ethnic" and still got an A from the man. Sounds like some people are biased themselves.
