Lope is one of the smartest people i've ever known. he is very modest. he will never deliberately make you feel stupid. classes are discussion based and participation is crucial. often his classes are filled with uninterested students. this frustrates him. i recommend him to anyone who's serious about literature.

This class was not fun, but rarely do you hear of someone that takes this course and likes it. Toward the end of the course, he started getting really picky with grading. He wanted analysis, but never really taught how to provide it. Overall, his discussions were useless and class time wasn't well spent. I wouldn't recommend him.

The WORST PROFESSOR FOR COMPOSITION!! Do not take him if you have the choice. He makes you feel bad when you answer questions when you try to participate, then he tells you that you dont participate enough. Helpful on papers with his comments though but expects you to know stuff that he doesnt teach. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!

One word - A JOKE... OK that is two words but I doubt he would even notice. It is rediculous that he got paid to teach this class. By far the worst class and worst prof i had in 4 years at Pitt. But, with that said, I didn't do any work or ever pay attention and got a B.

yes, I wanted to pull my hair out sometimes in that class, but Lope's a nice guy, and in the end I got a decent grade for doing fairly little work and ****ting through papers an hour before they were due, so overall, not bad.

Difficult class for anyone who has taken a class with an involved professor. Spends much of the time behind the desk leading discussion with phrases like "so tell me what you think." I feel like I covered literature more deeply in AP English in high school. Also allowed people to screw around during class. Very frustrating class.

Very interesting lectures with a lot of ideas presented. Sometimes the ideas are pretty out there though and sometimes it almost seems held against you if you disagree. The the most fair gradings of papers and very few comments. Curriculum for "Lit of the Americas" had nothing to do with authors not from Europe.
