Mark really cares about his students and their success even beyond the classroom. I lived for his lectures and always walked away feeling better than when I had come in. He really makes Shakespeare come to life and you can tell he's passionate about what he does. Definitely would recommend!

Professor Matheson cares a lot about his students' success and well-being. He is very knowledgeable about Shakespeare, both the content and context of his plays. The class is very heavy on reading Shakespeare's plays, so make sure not to get behind on in. Matheson has very good lectures, but he is easygoing if you have to miss a few.

He's the best literature teacher I've ever had and close to my favorite teacher I've ever had, period. He really cares about his students and genuinely wants you to succeed. He greets you by name and asks about how you are, regardless of whether you participate a ton or not. Would recommend him to anyone, even if you don't like Shakespeare.

What can I say about Mark that hasn't already been said? He is truly one of the best if not THE best professor at the U. I have yet to meet another teacher so passionate about the material and their students. I would take his Shakespeare and Film class again and again if I could.

Comment:
Interested in inspirational speaking more than Shakespeare (life lessons). I would have liked to learn more about The Bard and less about what Prof. Matheson thought "young women" should do with their lives. He spoke about the perils of womankind without ever acknowledging his privilege as a man ans said things that often felt condescending.

Prof. Matheson is able to elevate Shakespeare to an entirely new sphere; I gained a far greater understand of and appreciation for Shakespeare's works. Prof. Matheson is very committed to students; he goes out of his way to help them. He is extremely nice and has an uncanny ability to memorize names!

Like everyone else, Matheson is the best professor and just about the greatest guy I've ever come in contact with. I looked forward to his class every Monday/Wednesday, and I loved listening to him teach. He seems underutilized as a professor and doesn't teach often, so if you can take a class from him, jump at the chance. Infectious laugh, too.

Professor Matheson is an incredibly smart, kind man. His lectures are always thoughtful and interesting. He challenges his students intellectually, and often assigns essays that require true thought. Outside of class, he maintains the same enthusiasm for his students as he does the literature he teaches. He truly has a heart of gold.

Best professor in the department, hands down. Smart, helpful and so kind. He has an uncanny ability to remember student's names. I will be sad the day he is not my professor anymore. One funny thing though-he always goes on tangents in class about other works of lit, which can foster some zoning out. No matter though, he's the best. :)
