Dr. Bookstaver is incredibly knowledgeable in the mechanisms behind organic chemistry, it was his field of study when pursuing his doctorates after all. It's a shame he won't be teaching organic as often for future students because he ensures that you know the mechanisms behind the molecules and in turn, organic life itself.

I've had Dr. Bookstaver for Chem II, Organic Chem, and will have him next semester for OChem 2. His knowledge of the subject is unbelievable, and he is a great teacher. If you are taking chemistry because you HAVE to as a requirement, I wouldn't take it with him. He is a tough teacher, but you will get the most out of the class from him.

Dr. Bookstaver is a great teacher. You won't meet a nicer guy either, he really wants you to learn. His tests are really hard, but then again, what do you expect with Organic Chemistry? Take him if you get the chance

Dr. Bookstaver is great. If you want to learn Chemistry, take his course. If your a dumbass who is not willing to put in the proper hours studying, then drop out of college. He works you hard but it pays off when you transfer.

The class wasn't too bad overall, except for the lab. The grading is too anal and you risk getting a B if shooting for an A because of his accuracy requirements. If taking his class, don't let up in intensity in the lab. The exams are pretty easy but occasionally he tries to trip you up.

Very intelligent professor and overall not terribly difficult. He is a pretty nice guy and seems to really enjoy his work. My only problem with him was the incredibly anal scores given on lab experiments. Otherwise, show up to class and do some studying and a B is easily manageable.

I agree he is very knowledgeable and he teaches so that you learn and not just to give you a grade. however that also makes the class very difficult his class was the only one that I didn't get an A in at SCC. The biggest thing to concern yourself with is accuracy in lab reports i.e. sig figs, weights and measures etc. they all need to be right on.

He's very knowledgable about his area of study. Pay close attention to his lectures in class, do online quizzes early in case of ?'s, and study for the tests. It's not easy, if one hasn't had chemistry for a while. If your unclear on a topic attend his office hours and he is very helpful. He's very intelligent and has a good sense of humor.

One of the best professors I have ever had. Pretty funny, sometimes sarcastic, but alway patient when you ask him questions. His explainations are crystal clear. Make sure you learn significant digits, because he is a stickler and takes off points freely. Study the notes he gives and pay attention to problems he does on the board...that's your test

It doesn't get any better than this. A humble, uber-intelligent professor who has total command of the subject matter. He is willing to help at all costs inside and outside of the classroom. If you aren't willing to provide an equal amount of effort that he displays, you should opt for another professor. Who would have guessed he's a Wash U PhD

Dr. Bookstaver is the best. Unpretentious despite holding a doctorate in organic chemistry from Washington University. One of the funniest teachers you will ever have and very knowledgeable. Very witty. I wish all teachers had his command of the subject matter and a fraction of his personality. Study, rarely does someone finish a test early.

One of my favorite professors even though I was only in his lab class and not the lecture. Be careful to record data accurately; he scrutinizes the lab reports. He is really helpful and his jokes were funny. When I was confused about something from my lecture class, he helped me understand it even though it wasn't for the lab class.

You really learn a lot from his class if you pay attention. He really knows his stuff and will help you during his office hours. His lectures are interesting and his "chemistry" jokes are funny. Just pay attention during his lectures ( which are on powerpoint as well), for instance especially when he stresses things on the board it means they are o

This course was hard for me, but I got through it. A lot of memorization and lots of work, tests were really hard for me, and a lot of the class. One of our average scores was a 65% for the whole class, that tells you something.

One of my favorite professors ever. I'll never forget HIS favorite quote "Nothing happens in chemistry unless it lowers the energy of the system." I got an "A" in his class but I busted my butt. The study groups were helpful. Not an easy class, but highly recommended. Bookstaver is a class act.
