This class was the hardest class I have ever taken. I failed all of the tests and he was very hard to work with. He didn't seem to want to help me with my grade, so I was left on my own. His tests are very hard and he expects you to know everything. His class is all lecture and you need to basically write down everything he says in order to pass.

Fantastic teacher, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about subject. Interesting and funny. Tests are based on overall concepts and themes rather than very specific details such as dates. Tough, but fair.

Dr. Fessler is one of greatest professors I have ever had. He is not always very easy, but he is most certainly interesting and more than willing to help. It is his desire for you to do well in the course, so do not be afraid to stop by his office if you feel you are doing poorly.

American History was awesome! I learned so much about how our country was formed--from details to big picture. Tests are hard, but well worth the studying.

For the tests, skim for his key words he gives you. Otherwise he stresses "key ideas" instead of places or people. His tests are hard, but only because the essay is weighted so much. If you don't take it early in the day, stay awake, and take decent notes, you should be in fine shape.

Tough prof, challenging classes--but infinitely interesting and relevant. Tells good stories and incorporates a variety of teaching strategies; refreshing, given that most college history profs are little more than walking, talking (and horrifically boring) textbooks.

Dr. Fessler is one of the best professors at Dordt. He is tough, but encourages students to engage history in new and creative ways. His lectures are clear and interesting, but he also utilizes a variety of other teaching methods including debates, simulations, and even a battlefield tour for his Civil War class. Truly an excellent educator.

Dr. Fessler is wonderful. He IS very hard, but he really cares about making his students successful and pushes us to succeed. Anyone who thinks he is lazy is ignorant and just angry that THEY were too lazy to do the work needed to succeed in his class.
