Hamwi was probably one of the worst professors I've had. He's just really boring and doesn't really teach anything about writing essays. We basically just sat in class the whole time listening to his opinions of the readings and things he has written. Attendance is MANDATORY. If you don't show up, your grade will drop. I learned the hard way.

Be prepared to discuss what ever it is you read. You will need the course packet and the book Ways of Reading. I don't recommend buying the book Rules for Writers since we only read a few pages out the book during class and that was it. The class is super boring and I honestly wouldn't recommend it. He never actually teaches you how to write.

I would only recommend Hamwi as a last resort. He takes roll. He is VERY boring and uses the entire class period to talk about his own opinions. He doesn't help much at all with how to write the papers assigned, though they aren't hard to begin with (the longest we had to write was 4 1/2-5 pages). The class is easy to pass, but I dreaded attending.

He is not bad at all. I actually enjoyed this professor. Papers were not difficult at all, the longest paper we had to write was 4 and a half pages which helped me since writing is not the easiest thing for me to do. His final was just a written in class essay and was not hard at all. I enjoyed this professor!

He is not a hard grader at all. I passed all essays with at least a C and allows you to revise in order to get a better grade.Offers a lot of help if you go to his office hourse and has an intresting way of thinking. Makes you see the world different. Journals are pretty easy. Overall was an easy class.

Definitely not an easy grader, but he is fair. The class itself is pretty difficult. The work requires you to dig a little deeper into text. It's worth it though. You will finish this class a better essayist. You will learn, I think that's the point of this class. Pay attention, come with the intent to learn, and you will be fine.

Fair grader. Class not too hard. He gets confusing and repetitive a lot. Interrupts you every time you talk, can't really argue with him; so close minded. Class is pretty interesting though, participate and he likes you. Get to redo paper for average grade so that's cool.

this teacher hardly teaches how to actually write the essays. he mostly wants us to write it his way! he is hardly in class. he leaves class when we do group discussions and we dont really discuss anything. he still uses the same essay topics and journals for every semester!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

really hard at grading. based on 3 essays a research paper and about 25 journal entries. if you do not agree with his point of view he will grade harder on your essays and give a lower grade. as long as you agree with him and explain everything in detail you will survive.

If you pay attention to what he wants you to write on your essays, you should be okay. When he says analyze, ANALYZE, ANALYZE, ANALYZE. Pretty easy: just 20 something journals you turn in at the end and 4 essays throughout, 1 essay for the final. Funny sometimes but can go on and on about some things. Try not to fall asleep.

At first seems like a hard not so friendly professor, however throughout the semester he eases up a bit and you see that he is actually really friendly and helpful.... At first I was pissed at my first essay grade (C+) and he wrote all over my paper but you know what, he did it for us to improve ourselves. I don't know why people rate him sooo low!
