It has been years since I took this class, and I already have my B.A. in English. This glorious Englishman never gave me an A. There was one D- essay that he gave me a chance to re-do and then I got a B- after I including better transitions, organized my ideas, and beefed up my thesis. He toughened me into a better essay writer and thinker.

Mr. Duxbury is an amazing teacher. He rarely gives out A's, but is still a lenient grader. Easy work consisted of several short 300 word essays and reading journals. The books were barely used in class though. He's hilarious and always let us out super early. Attendance is somewhat mandatory. I recommend him to anyone that isn't horrendously lazy!

Comment:

Duxbury is witty and challenging. To get an A you have to be willing to do some deep thinking - and outside the box. Don't just regurgitate what you think he wants to hear. What he wants is for his students to think critically and academically present those thoughts. I agree that it is not an easy A, but he is by no means vague or unclear about it.

Dux is awesome. As others said, he does NOT hand out A's but if you earn one, you will feel very accomplished and proud. He has great insight, hes reliable, sometimes vague, but a very good person and very understanding. Happy to have had him on my Study Abroad trip!

Prof. Duxbury is funny, animated, and passionate. However, he also has some sort of issue with writing down prompts for his essays. His grading system is also a little unusual. Never have I had a professor so reluctant to give an "A". Of the four essays I turned in 3 were "B+"'s and only one an "A-". In short; take him, but be prepared for a "B".

It is no doubt that Dux is a great guy, and an extremely intelligent professor. I loved his class, and enjoyed the discussions. However, don't take this class for an easy "A" because you won't get it. His assignments are vague, and it is near impossible to find out what he is looking for in your work.

Great lectures, funny and interesting. Very nice. He's a critical grader and has very high standards: if you want an A, don't take unless you're a good writer. His assignments are very vague--go by his office hour and make sure you ask him what you want to know. Lots of movies in class. All in all, a great teacher.

I enjoyed the class, but it almost ruined my GPA. He is never very clear on what he wants from students and gives only vague advice on fixing papers. Basically, your grade will be based on luck and intuition. If you don't mind a B or a C, fun teacher, highly entertaining, but good luck if you want an A. Haha.

Took Eng 1b in 1988 with Duxbury. We spent the semester on War & Peace. Hard but loved the class. Great teacher with high expectations of student. My sister took Eng1a with him but didn't care for the reading or assignments (write a personal ad?)

Easiest English class ever!! An English teacher who has an ENGLISH accent. A lot of the essays based on literature get connected with personal life. You will CRACK UP!!! Such a wonderful character!!! I was dreading taking English, Ive had boring professors in the past. Mr. Duxbury made the class very enjoyable and worth taking. He is very funny, you are guaranteed to laugh your ass off. Hes really easy on grading as long as you do all the work. Only wish he was teaching 1A.

The semester had been an enlightening experience. I came into the class not expecting much at all; just to finish my last English class and be done with it. But, Prof. Duxbury is a great educator and made me remember that my love for writing and literature had never gone. Now, I've decided to major in both Soc and English lit at SF state.
