Comment:

Funny guy. He tries to pull students into his lectures, which usually works. Lectures are helpful but not mandatory, except he does throw out clicker questions sometimes for credit. He posts his powerpoints online, which has enough information to ace his midterms. Do study hard though, there's lots to remember!

Schmidt is the most awesome professor I've had at UCSD. He makes class interesting and pulls you into his lectures. His test questions are straightforward, and I preferred his lecture style to Crawford, who taught the second half of the class. Basically, even if you're not into plants, the class is still fun and interesting

I came into this class dreading it and thinking it twas going to be boring, but wow was I wrong. The class was challenging but really fun. I learned a lot. Schmidt is an excellent lecturer even though his exam is hard. Crawford has way easier exams and way easier lectures (second half). There are 2 exams, one for each prof + 10% extra credit!!

Prof. Schmidt loves teaching, which makes you want to learn bio. However, don't let his friendly and laidback demeanor fool you! His tests are much harder than you would expect. Study hard and do all the practice tests he gives you.

THis class was defintely the hardest class I have taken at UCSD. THe midterms and finals are very difficult. It isn't enough to memorize rather you have to fully understand the concepts and apply them. I learned alot but this is not the class for an easy A. Good lecturer but exams are very difficult. Study Hard

FREAKING HARD CLASS!! his midterms are so effing difficult. all short answer and fill in. some T/F. seriously though, i regret taking him as a professor only because his exams were so difficult. he's a nice guy, but his exams are definitely not nice. my friends took other bild1 professors and did way better than i did. im depressed now.

He is a very nice guy, i got to have lunch with him once, but he's so hard. His tests are extremely challenging, very difficult, not really similar to the practice midterms either. This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken at ucsd thus far.

His class is exteremely difficult, and although he is interesting, the material is too broad to keep your attention, especially if you're not a morning person. I thought he mumbled a little bit also. Make sure you have a friend to take this class with you, b/c 2 minds will think of more possible midterm questions than 1.

The plant bio class taught by Crawford and Schmidt is a hidden gem in the bio classes @ UCSD. Not many people signed up for it because everybody's a "human" bio major. BUT it's one of the EASIEST Upper div BIO CLASSES EVER! Take it if you need an easy A. Seriously, I bombed the only midterm but still got an A in the end.

Very nice guy. Prof recommended overall. Extremely hard class as said below, but it's bio @ UCSD... you will learn alot. Memorize notes well, same concepts show up on exams... but also read book thoroughly cause you must apply much of what you read. PROF IS VERY APPROACHABLE. Def. a weeder class, if you can handle it you can handle UCSD. STUDY HARD

Very good professor, but very hard class. Midterms and Finals really hard and sometimes hard to finish on time. He doesn't just want the facts but wants you to apply them to concepts. Easy to take notes but overall very hard class.

This class was amazing and insightful. Both Schmidt and Crawford put together really interesting lectures and were excited about plants. The test were hard- you had to know everything they wrote on the board, but you could ignore the book and the only assignments were the midterm and the final. You must go to class to do well.
