Comment:

This class is very difficult, but Dr. Porter is very willing to help. Attend his office hours and work in groups. A few homework assignments plus two take home exams. He is the best professor I have ever had!His jokes and laugh make the class easier to get through! After my second semester with Dr. Porter I highly recommend taking a class with him!

Comment:

Dr. Porter is an extremely humble professor. He is very approachable and really wants his students to succeed. As long as you come to class and participate you will get an A. Only warning, he did not give out any grades the entire semester so it was hard to judge your work. Take this class, its very interesting and he's awesome!

He is a pretty boring lecturer but I don't agree with previous people saying he is hard. His exam was fair and was not as hard as the other lecturers. Just take notes in lecture and study them and study the book, you'll do great.

He was pretty unhelpful overall, and the lectures were very disorganized. I went to talk with him once during office hours because I was interested in environmental science (supposedly his area), asked about what courses would be good to take. He just laughed and said he couldn't really help me and gave me no advice at all.

His tests do not match what he teaches or the book very well. He is a nice guy but very poor lecturer. You can drop one midterm in this class and it's bc everyone does so bad on his.

no point in trying to understand his powerpoint slides. whenever he talks about pesticides, WRITE IT DOWN. a lot of stuff on exams he didn't even talk about in lectures. he's not the worst professor but other 2 are better

Porter is not a good lecturer. His slides are confusing and he gets very specific about names. He lied to my face about what would be on the exam. I went to his office hours for help and just added more info that was useless and doesn't teach well. If this class is required do good on the previous 2 exams because his is the hardest by far.

His lectures are boring and hard to take good notes for. Rambles incessantly about pesticides. Exam was more difficult than the others and also disorganized. With the structure of this class, it's recommended to just not try during his section, as his exam will be the one you drop unless if you study harder than you do with the other lecturers.

Professor Porter is extremely friendly and loves what he does, he just over-complicates his lectures by using big words related to biology, and then saying we don't need to know that. Lectures somewhat followed the book... Exams were tough.

This class is way too difficult to be an elemtary rated course. I studied hard, read the text, and I still barely managed to get a C. What frustrated me the most was that he gave the test and then 2 weeks after found questions that didn't have answers. If he doesn't know the material, how can you?

Couldn't pay attention in class what so ever. I am majoring in biology and honestly didn't learn one single thing in his lectures. I had to teach myself everything from the book which resulted in a terrible midterm grade since he was so vague on everything he taught. if you are taking a bio 101, be warned, you need to work extra hard!!!

Porter is by far the worst of the 101 professors! He is super vague about what we need to know and what we need to write down. It's useful to have a laptop for his lectures in order to try to get more of his ramblings down. This also means you don't have to print off the full 20 pages of slides he had for some of his lectures. watch the animations!

Comment:

Because Thoma's slides were so organized, it was a hard transition to Porter's lecture style. He's a really nice guy and helps you A LOT if you come in for office hours/schedule an appointment, but his lectures are very confusing and you NEED you laptop if you want to take good notes. Go to the book to add information to the slides from class.
