I've had worse, I've had better. Prof. Gardner has such a thorough, intuitive understanding of differential equations (and the mathematics of physical systems) that he makes it look easy - watching him solve things on the board is like watching an Olympic speed skater do laps around you while you struggle to stand on the ice. It was interesting.

I have to teach myself the entire course by reading the book, watching YouTube videos, and just trying to figure out differential equations on my own. He gets lost in his own attempts to teach the class on top of the fact that I can't hear him or read his writing. He offers no help when I ask him questions and has never answered any of my emails.

This guy is the worst professor I have ever had. He is very unclear and doesn''t really teach anything just mostly writes on the board. Also he constantly breaks all the pieces of chalk probably to add just that one thing to be annoying.

I have yet to see him do an example where he didn't mess something up, get extremely confused, and then leave it unfinished. How did this guy get hired? He can barely speak to a class of 30 kids without mumbling and acting awkward, I couldn't even imagine him speaking to a dean. Someone at Umass should evaluate his class so we can get a refund.

He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is disorganized and messes up examples on the board multiple times per class. I gave him my exam 1 back so he could fix grading errors and 1.5 months later haven't gotten it back. He makes hw due days before he covers that section in lecture. DO NOT TAKE HIS COURSE IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

Gardner's one of my favorite professors, hands down. Sure he's scatter-brained and makes mistakes on the board, but his lectures are really detailed and actually explain the math thoroughly. If you just sit there in class and wait for the theorems, avoid him, but if you're up to it, you can learn a ton from his lectures. Plus, awkwardly funny.

I was a senior about to graduate with a 4.0 and then I took Gardner's class. I got a c+.I'd read all the comments about him here but I thought I can do this. OH BOY WAS I WRONG. BY FAR THE WORST PROFESSOR IN THE HISTORY OF EDUCATION. AVOID HIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS. No matter how smart you think you are. The class average for the final was 46%!!!!

Absolute worst excuse for a teacher I have ever dealt with. Makes mistakes 90% of the time while he babbles for 50 minutes into the chalkboard. I have a higher grade than most students who attend lecture due to his errors in material. Learned more by not going and reading the book than attending his lecture. AVOID.

Poorly taught. Shows that he never learned how to proof read. Solutions will always have errors and tests will have multiple typos. I feel bad for the TA who hand edits all his typos.

By far the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire educational history. He doesn't teach, you are basically better off learning from a rabid squirrel, because he writes chicken scratch and always makes mistakes. Never take a class with him. He will fail at least 50% of the class

Smart guy. I wouldn't suggest him for a low level calc class cause he's just too smart. But, if you're taking a more serious math class, his brain is a nice thing to have access to.
