LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE HERE. He is an incredibly enlightening professor, but if you value your grade and don't want to come out of this class an expert exegete, then do not take this class. He is a very tough grader and wants the utmost detail in your exegesis.

He is an intelligent and knows his stuff. I would say that is hard to talk with him outside of class, especially if you don't understand the material. I ended up passing this class. I would not recommend this class in general. I would recommend this class ONLY if you understand Latin and already have a few theology classes under your belt.

Dr. Minto is great. He focuses on the principals needed to read the Bible well rather than reading scripture itself, though a lot of scripture is read. The exegesis paper is challenging and time consuming to write, but you learn a lot in writing it. When I took him the paper topic coincided with the Christmas or Easter season. He is challenging.

One of the classes that is surely changing my life. A lot of work but doable and clear. Knows his stuff very well and is very sound in his reasoning and views. One of the people in my life I've met who challenges you the most to grow intellectually and spiritually. His love for Christ and the Church is very real. Surely one of a kind!

I took Dr. Minto for PBS 1 and 2 and it was better than I expected. There's alot of homework expected and exgesis in both classes but hard work is rewarded. The midterm and final are open book/notes with the questions given before hand. As long as you show interest and do your best, he will give you a good grade.

Minto knows his stuff. He makes you work hard, but so long as you do the assignments, you will do fine. sometimes, it is better to skip a low percentage assignment if you really need to focus on other things. He expects sound logic in exegetical papers; try not to stretch the text to add to length or seem insightful; he will call you out on it.

Very intelligent and great instructor. This was a summer course, and I learned more in this three weeks than I ever did with another professor who taught the same course previously. He does require you to work (writing full length papers, reading) and he will push you to meet his expectations. If you're lazy, you will do poorly.

I absolutely disliked this class. I got an A in my first PBS class and I barely made it through this class...I'm a Senior and I barely made it through! I definitely would recommend another professor if you don't like PowerPoint lectures. I just couldn't follow his teaching style. He's a nice guy and intelligent, just not good at teaching.

To those who didn't think he would listen to an opposing view, maybe if you had substantiated your position he would have appreciated it more. On 2 assignments I was deliberately provocative but supported my arguments, and I got A's on them. You get out of the class what you put into it.

Minto is THE MAN! I have graduated and I still use the principles he taught us in class. He is not a "spirituality" teacher, though he is a spiritual man. In the classroom, he is human and an intellectual. Not taking him will impoverish your education. Don't be afraid of working; embrace the challenge. Stay thirsty, my friends.

Best professor at Steubenville, hands down. Does real Bible scholarship instead of reading his beliefs into the text like a couple of other not to be named professors. This does not make him a liberal at all. He is completely orthodox, and honest in pursuing the truth within the teachings of the Church.

Wonderful teacher but he is very demanding and he should be. You're in college and should be pushed beyond your limits in order to grow. Often accused of being liberal, but he is not. Solidly orthodox and more than willing to give you advice on how to improve your scholarly work!

He is an amazing teacher. Almost Too smart for Steubenville Ohio. The best part are his stories about life. He is great for the intellectual type, sadly few theology students are. You can't do better then Dr. Minto.

One of the best theology professors at Franciscan. He gets a bad rap from people who think he's too liberal. However, unlike Hahn or Bergsma he's actually preparing you for scholarship beyond mere Bible study. You know, what a professor's SUPPOSED to do. Great for serious graduate students looking to go on to PhD work.

Comment:
Brilliant. Expects students to truly command complex material (which is why so many students fail his first exam). His class is more about how Biblical exegesis is done, less about the Bible itself (contrast Bergsma). Very moderate (not a conservative like Hahn). Highly recommended for students who really want to learn about Biblical scholarship.

I enjoyed his teaching style, and I like the fact that he had us write a lot. In terms of content, however, I had a serious problem with his views. Franciscan University is supposed to be a conservative Catholic university, but Minto's views on the inerrancy of the bible are very liberal. I'm glad Scott Hahn is there to warn us against his errors.

Phenominal! His class IS work but it is well worth it. Not nearly as bad as some would have you believe. Frankly, negative comments seem to be from those who expect Franciscan to be a 4-yr-retreat. Cares about his students. Teaches you how to do exegesis, which you will use long after the course. He has a very beautiful soul, and it comes through in his teaching--very highly recommended.

Special professor. Emphasizes writing, which is great. Orthodox, but a little liberal.
