The best lectures you will attend in your undergrad stint at Chapman... Here I am 20 years later rating him, just because his zeal and passion is that great. How about those Cubbies? Thanks Dr. Slayton for leading by example - If you ever go on tour Ill bring my kids to see a legend.

Amazing. Slayton is kind, energetic, honest, and hilarious. So passionate about history it made me declare a history minor. Only two assignments all year: two eight page, double-spaced essays, one of which was very open ended. So easy to do well if you come to class and take good notes. Any bad reviewers weren't trying hard enough, sorry.

Took classes with Dr. Slayton twice, HIST 296 and Senior Seminar, and he was one of the best teachers I'd ever had. His lectures are engaging and energetic. But don't go into one of his classes expecting an easy A. He's a fair grader, is always ready to help, and will really drive you to improve, as long as you're willing to put in the work.

I liked Slayton a lot, he's a decent guy and a decent teacher. Shouts a lot and tries to "bring the history alive." Bring earplugs if you have sensitive ears lol. But otherwise a very effective professor.

I loved this class! He really knows how to make a boring subject like history, interesting and fun! Yes, he speaks loudly quite often but that's simply because he's so passionate about what he's teaching! He literally will act out scenes from wars ad other historical events to make it easy for us to remember. No laptops. But for sure a good time

Overall, a great professor. Really interesting lectures, however, no laptops are allowed so they may be a little long. I took the 3 hour class and always got out an hour early. Fewtests, no homework and a decent grading scale. Be prepared to write well on the essay tests... he expects intelligent and thoughtful work! Oh and 2 novels... SPARKNOTES!

okay whoever is making these good comments must be history majors...i make very good grades, and this class was absolutely the WORST class I have ever taken at chapman. Not only is he a little ****, he yells the entire class, and when you go in for extra help...he just sits there and does nothing. he gives no powerpoint, no laptops allowed, and h

Dr. Slayton's course was the most stimulating and exciting that I have ever taken at Chapman. His lectures are captivating, and instead of huge textbooks Slayton uses period literature, which is often more interesting and less expensive. If you have an opportunity to take a class from this man, you will never regret it.

Great teacher. He knows his stuff very well. Often funny, somewhat of a hard grader, but he gives you lectures with enough info to easily get an A. I highly recommend his classses whenever they are offered.

He is a good teacher, knows what he is talking about, cares about the subjet. He can be a bit boring after you take him once. His grading is the screwiest I have ever seen. You can ace one exam, write something very similar the next time and get a C. Never uses the books. Dont miss class and come up with your own thesis ideas and ur fine

No he didn't write that comment. I'm one of his advisees. In response to the negative rating on Slayton below, all I can assume is that whoever posted it probably isn't too big on academics and doesn't like doing actual college level work. Coming up with thesis statements and evidence to back it up shouldn't be so hard in an upper-division course.

Slayton is hard. But you will learn. Most history majors agree that he is one of Chapman's better professors. Though, some people (ie rater few lines down) detest real learning, believe the only good professor is an easy professor, and resort to b*tching when a course is just too smart for them. If you cant stand the heat get out of the classroom.

It boggles my mind what a professor of Slayton's caliber is doing here. Chapman University doesn't deserve this brilliant man. His courses have been the only challenging and interesting ones I've had so far at this highly unstimulating and academically boring school...

In my opinion, Professor Slayton is extremely overqualified to be teaching at Chapman. His genius and insight would be better suited at a school like Harvard or Princeton. Students at those schools wouldn't be complaining about how fast he goes in his lectures or how hard he is. Slayton is the reason why I'm still attending Chapman. Brilliant man.

He's a great teacher. If you have the opportunity to take history from anyone at Chapman, he's your man. You will never have a dull moment in that class. The tests are a little rough, but if you know your history, then you are okay. Take good notes and study before the tests, and you'll do fine. Slayton is awesome though, seriously.

The best professor at Chapman. He makes history alive again. Guarantee you'll laugh at least once. Tests are challenging, just develop a very good thesis and have specific details. Very loud and likes to incorporate the class in his examples.

Best professor @ Chapman by far. Lectures are unbeleivable! He has so much energy! His tests are hard, but you will learn a TON. He's the best. If I had taken him before my senior year, I would have changed my major to history.
