This Professor was the worst. He went to fast for no reason and acted like it was a summer class. He is extremely judgemental and will make fun of you for no reason. He is especially mean to students of color and picks on them for no reason. Avoid at all costs. Take over the summer. Very racist.

Comment:

The first day of class he gave instructions no one understood ("get counterclockwise to collect papers") and then thrust some papers in my face like I was an idiot (he gave me two of the same copy, so I'm glad to have a professor that can't follow his own instructions.) I'd switch if I could. Feels like it's gonna be a long semester.

I took Mr. Holliday's oceanography course 23yrs ago. It might've been his first year teaching at El Camino. Anyway, to give you an idea of how awesome the class was, I just Googled his name hoping to thank him all these years later for the passion he shared with me for learning about and caring for our planet. Study. Get an A. So worth it!

Professor Holliday inspires the best in you and challenges you to push yourself to your next level. His lecture style keeps your attention and his tests are clear, covering the geology concepts learned in lecture/lab. Whether you are a science major or just fulfilling a GE, Holliday comes highly recommended from his students.

Comment:

I wish every teacher cared about their job as much as he does. He puts a lot into each lecture so he intern expects a lot out of you. His class is entertaining, and if you take his class, take the lab at the same time it will improve your grade. You NEED the book and you have to stay on top of your homework. Grade relies on the tests which sux.

Very knowledgeable/enthusiastic guy. Although the class was at a bad time (afternoon for 3 hours M/W) and the Monday lectures were tough, you got to learn alot of really cool and applicable things.

Holliday is the best professor I have ever met. All of his lectures are so interesting, and he cracks jokes here and there. He is very insightful and knows what he is talking about. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you do not understand something. He is there to help you and wants you to succeed in life. Holliday is fun, & he motivated me 100%

Holliday - what a great man. Do the HW. Study for the exams; they can be trickily worded! I made killer flash cards for every exam & I got an A on every exam w/the exception of the final, which I only made 1/4 of the cards & did so in a rush, & I got a C. Proof: flashcards work! It's time consuming, but these are study habits that breed success!

4 lecture exams, 2 lab tests, 1 research paper, weekly homework. Great professor; makes EVERYTHING make sense! Talks about the real issues. Lectures are LONG but very, very interesting. Field trips are probably the most challenging thing in the entire class because of distance for those with no car (Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, two others).

Do all the work and you'll do fine. He recommends flash cards to help for test, and they work! His lectures are never boring and will explain the material in ways for you to understand. Homework is a must and he will say it himself. Homework definitely helps understand what you are reviewing in class. Great professor and would recommend to everyone

I have honors with him so he is very serious about attending class, and has clear lectures. But his lectures are heavy and his field trips are annoying. Labs are the worst bc it is soooooooo much work. His exams require one to study very hard and has 1 research essay. If you can take another class do yourself a favor and do it.

He teaches an intense class. Hefty note-taking and study are required, along with regular but simple homework. Holliday KNOWS his material, so listen and ask questions. He leans towards sympathetic grading, and even bumps up borderline grades (thanks!). Become friends with your lab partner, and the labs and educational field-trips will be fun.

If you are only taking Oceanography 10 for the units, this is not the class for you! I'm a business major and I'm required to take a science class so I chose this one, and at the beginning of this class it was easy and the professor is clear. The class meetings are too long and its nonstop work. Mind you this is an honors course.

He's honestly a really good teacher; just really anal and specific. He'll ask you questions about previous lectures randomly. The class has a provided notebook so you only need that and the textbook to bring to class. Field trip are pretty fun, but if you have a class right before or after this one, it's hard to get to either on time.

Mr Holliday has cool experiences to speak about and also has 3 field trips to go on that are pretty fun and interesting. you do have to study for quizzes but not drastically

Very knowledgable and inspiring. Since taking his class, I feel I know more about earth science and our environment. A great deal of relevent information is presented in easy to understand formats. He cares about students and is very supportive. Provides students with tools to succeed in his class as well as other college courses and in life.

Joe Holliday is a great professor. The homework was fairly easy compared to other classes because he goes over the material in class. He gave second chances for homework. The tests were very hard, but it was everything that he goes over in class. However, he does grade on a curve which was great. He played some pretty funny jokes in class.

Professor Holliday is a genuine person with a kind heart and is one of the best professors on campus! He KNOWS the material front and back and presents his lectures with a passion that ultimately inspires you to learn more about the subject of Oceanography. I HIGHLY recommend study groups with the students at your table beofre tests! Take him!
