Comment:

Dr. Stitt is a wonderful professor. He has so much enthusiasm for the subject and knows it very well. He makes what could be a dull class entertaining and makes the poetry simple and clear to understand. Overall I had a great experience with him. Some people said he was a tough grader, but I always did fine on the papers!

Really fun professor,gets off topic a lot in a highly humorous manner, hard on specifics in his class and he basically grades you on whether he likes you and whether you participate. But he knows his stuff and I learned a lot from him!

He cannot stay on topic, but it's usually pretty funny when he goes off. He does know what he's talking about he's just a little strange and you have to get used to it. I think the class is fun, and I have learned something.

Many students will think he's crazy or has a huge ego, but, as other raters have pointed out, it's all irony. His class is hugely entertaining as well as extremely educational. He really knows his stuff and by the end of the class, if you pay attention (not too difficult), you will, too.

I was so excited about taking this class, but it only took 2 classes for me to realize what a complete jerk this guy is. Although I received high marks his class, I think I would've learned more sitting in my apartment with my books closed than I did by listening to him rattle on about himself and his perceived iconic status. Stay away from him!

Comment:

I can see why people don't like him - you either get the joke or you don't. The thing is he does know poetry, and if you have any interest in the subject, especially the mechanics of it, he is one of the best people to learn from. On top of that, he personally knew some of the people you study, and he is an editor, which makes him a great source for practical knowledge. Of course, Gettysburg students are not known for their ability to perceive irony, or anything outside of their small, sheltered world.

This class made me want to leave school. I hated going. I hate sitting there not learning anything. I hate his attempts to make fun of us for not learning anything when all he was teaching was how to count syllables. If they want him to edit the lit mag, fine, but he shouldn't be teaching.

The only people that think Stitt is high on himself are those that take themselves too seriously. Peter is the coolest cat to ever grace Gettysburg campus. He edits one of the top 5 literary magazines in the COUNTRY! He's the most interesting man and really knows about poetry. Love him!

Friendly, and likes to joke; but he is so annoyingly high on himself, he goes on tangents every class period. It's impossible to learn anything in his class, or write good papers for him, since he's unable to teach effectively.

Stitt is so unbelievable. He'll teach class like it's a joke and expect that you learned something. He's high and loose classes and anecdotes. Just laugh along, he'll appreciate your effort. Try to be his friend...it helps. He's an awesome guy :p
