If you have a burning desire to memorize 1200 images for the final, this is the class for you. His lectures were ridiculous. Instead of focusing on key images he merely flipped through every piece of art from the modern era. His paper assignment contained a prompt where a PhD was required to understand it, and then doesn't entertain any questions.

kalina is a delightful prof. knows a ton about modern art, puts up slides and then talks off the cuff about each of them during lecture. his readings/homework added to my understanding of concepts. he is an artist too, so that offers a unique perspective which i liked a lot. exams are not easy, but take him, you won't regret it.

Delightful professor. Kind and accommodating to students, passionate and knowledgeable about art history. Exams are difficult with a ton of memorization and some ambitious essays, but I learned SO MUCH, so the hard work was worth it. Love Richard Kalina and would definitely recommend him!

Does use a bit of favoritism for the overall grade, but does appreciate committment and honest work. You will do well if you committ time and genuine to the class. He's insightful and hilarious as a teacher!

Great professor for modern art concentration/art history major. He is helpful, honest and most importantly good at what he is doing. You will do fine as long as you show effort and write original and interesting papers. He loathes meretricious work.

While he does have a unique and scattered format for grading and assessment he is very fair. HARD but love him!he is a very well known artist and humble about his work (only found out via his website)he uses slides but stops on some images for what seems like a half hour to really pull it apart and make observations ...totally great teacher!!!

After taking this professor for two classes i cant say with complete clarity what exactly he wants from you, except effort. His grading seems a little arbitrary and he doesnt give much feedback, but hes open to improvement. I underestimated his tests for the midterm and got a D, but studied more for the final and ended up with an A-, so...try.

Absolutely the worst professor I have ever had. I won't go into too much detail but he is extremely harsh with grading and basically laughs at you when you try speaking to him about it. Avoid him at all costs.

The most disappointing class of my college career. Blatant favoritism, inability to teach, and a seemingly random grading system. I did well in the class but the grade was not worth enduring this Professor. If you truly love art, avoid at all costs.

I had a lot of fun in this class-the projects were varied and interesting. The format was different from what I expected (we spent most class time on critiques and all projects were done as homework) and the syllabus didn't mention his grading policies, but he's a really nice guy and I would take it again!

Don't take this man if you care about your grades. Clearly is not fit to be a professor. Apparently thinks Mattisse is the most important artist. He teaches you his opinions, and disregards everything else. An incredibly incompetent professor and unsympathetic to anyone besides Art History majors. Do not waste your time.

Professor Kalina exams consist of slide indentification, where one name the artist of the projected painting. He is very clear about which artists you must know and writes their names on the chalkboard when class begins. In order to get a good mark on his papers, one needs to dig up something from the library. He loathes wikipedia footnotes.

When I graduate next semester I will have taken five classes with Prof. Kalina. As a matter of fact I've taken the last three specifically because he was teaching them. It is almost impossible to not find him ridiculously smart and well-read.

An absolutely fantastic teacher. Makes art history more interesting by telling personal stories about the artists. It is possible to do poorly if you do not read or take notes; 2 or 3 articles a week maximum. Definately recommend.

Kalina likes simplicity in art. Hates Surrealism. NO formal analysis whatsoever and lectures focus on how he knows the artist instead of meaning and content.Syllabus isnt dated.Cannot articulate himself very well. Will do whatever he wants since he is chair of dept and his wife is a famous artist.
