Comment:
Professor Johnson is extremely intelligent and seems to genuinely care about his students. The course was pretty interesting. With that said, the readings became somewhat redundant and the class, in my opinion, was too discussion-based (esp. since it was 2 1/2 hours). Would've been nice to hear his insight a little more often.

No. Just no. All he does is make you talk about your feelings and write poetry. I didn't learn anything. But, you know, he's very nice and his class is easy.

Professor Johnson is one of the most knowledgeable passionate professors I have ever had, and he genuinely cares about his students. He has tons of experience in the field, which makes the course very interesting. Super discussion based, and seems easy, but is very enlightening. Actually take the time to do readings- they're great.

Professor johnson is one of the nicest, approachable, and resourceful professionals in the entire justice department. Deprivation of liberty made me think so much more critically on the discrepancies within our prison system. The course readings can become a bit repetitive but the documentaries are interesting and he makes discussions very engaging

Comment:
Prof. Johnson is very knowledgeable and has a lot to offer in terms of making students think critically about US criminal justice . However, because it was a gened and not everyone was interested, discussions got tedious/repetitive and casual racism was not called out. Goes out of his way to let everyone voice opinions. Pretty easy class overall.

I took several courses with Professor Johnson while an undergrad and grad student. He is an extremely nurturing and encouraging professor. He made the topic of the death penalty interesting and got me more engaged with the material. It's been a couple years and we're still in touch.

One of the sweetest and most knowledgable professors I've had at AU. Really cares about what students have to say and is very encouraging! Probably the only block classes where I wasn't bored to tears. The course is easy but super interesting. I will definitely be taking another class with Professor Johnson! Can't say enough good things about him.

I took Johnson for the Death Penalty honors colloquium and I beleive he is the most well rounded professor at this school. He knows how to lecture and engage better than any other professor I've had. Make sure you pry some trial stories out of him, he's been called to the stand by many, many death penalty defense teams. Take whatever you can w/ him

Johnson is a rather chill guy. Sure those 23 writing assignments got annoying after a while, but as long as made a bona fide effort then you got full credit. No final exam, just a short essay or a creative piece. Class discussions were interesting for the most part, but yeah, I can only hear "that's interesting" from various people so many times.

Great professor and discussion facilitator, chooses interesting books/subject matters. His class isn't exactly difficult, but definitely disagree that anyone w/ a brain will be bored by the end of the semester, as the discussions etc. are fascinating, it's the opposite meaning that those w/out a brain (ie who don't think) will leave class bored.

The class is extremely easy, which is a nice break, but most if not all intelligent students will be VERY bored by the end of the semester. You will almost feel insulted by the sheer volume of banal commentary Prof. Johnson allows to occur in class. You might want to wear ear plugs to his classes if you want to keep your sanity!

Prof. Johnson has definitely been, by far, the best professor I've ever at at AU. The class is very interesting even if you're not a criminal justice or law major and it's extremely easy, too. Your final grade depends on your final project which you get to choose - paper or short story - but he is unbelievably friendly and approachable.

The easiest professor I've ever had, only because he doesn't care about grades. But this class really makes you THINK, and while you can get away with not doing the work, the readings are interesting, and you're missing out if you don't participate. Class was entirely discussion-based, final involved a project of our choice.

Prof Johnson is a great man. Hes so nice and funny and explains things without preaching. His class was a lot of fun with interesting reading. You dont really learn anything, you just read books and discuss them, but he has an underlying theme which is interesting. Take him!

In a word, outstanding. Extremely fair, interesting, and an expert in his field. One paper assigned for the entire semester and it's the final (approx 3 pages)! So approachable and friendly, makes class a true pleasure
