Comment:
Gave little to no guidance on the thesis, majority of the class got a C or lower. Almost as if he was challenging the class to write a thesis on their own so he could be condescending when grading and reaffirm his intelligence. I wasted over 200 hours of work and still received a D (I was a 3.80 student). Do not take for thesis.

Scott is a great professor. His tests are difficult and you definitely have to read if you want to pass, but he does have excellent lectures and can talk about the subject for days. A very entertaining prof who keeps the class fun and is willing to help whoever needs it.

Scott is a great prof. As long as you do the readings and take notes, it will be fine. The course is designed to make you think; if you aren't prepared for work, you won't like it. Otherwise, he is pretty helpful and easy to talk to.

Scott is a very good prof for an intro class and has a humorous understanding of the US government, he looks at current topics as well as history, his tests are hard but if you take the time to study and actually do the work, it's really not bad at all.

While many have descr. JSJ as a tought prof, such is due merely to his obscurity and a class format that allows one's peers to waste time as they ramble off what is often wrong. His heart is in the right place, but to get an A, you'll have to kiss some @*!, and do conform to his/class thought despite what you may hear. Readings are great!

Scott is funny, or yet he tries to be, not always so successful though! His class is hard, and if you don't do the reading it will be a challenge to completely follow what he discusses in class. Nice guy, maybe not the best prof though to take an intro class.

Scott knows his stuff and make class awesome with little jokes. His teaching style envokes critical thought. His first words to our class were "I want to make your brains hurt" I learned a ton from him, and on a subject I was not really interested in.

J. Scott Johnson is a deep brother who can wax eloquent on the complexities of life, philosophy, and the philosophy of politics. It was he, a Politics Professor, who introduced me to the films of Akira Kurosawa.

If you've got the guts, I strongly suggest taking a class from Scott, he's really intelligent and fun, but don't slack off or you get killed in the end.

Scott is the best professor in the department, because he challenges the students by making them come up with the answers. When he approaches a writer, he will often defend that author's view, so students truly understand it. Take Scott if you can.

Man who loves what he does and knows his stuff. I learned so much in his class. The reading is only 15 pages per class, not too tough. Even if you're not a POLS major, like me, you'll enjoy this class. Tests aren't easy, but they're not difficult, either. He covers all of the concepts in class.

Much more challanging than the other profs in the Dept. Really makes you think and analyze. Heavily focused on political theory, which is helpful for understanding Politics as science. Much less partisan than any of the other POLS profs that I've had in the Dept. A must take Prof!

As other people said...hard classes that you feel good about once you're done. Learned a lot and think that other classes should be as demanding and as rewarding as this one.
