Make sure you show up to class, he has a different method of teaching and breaks things down so that it is easy. You do not necessarily need a textbook, you can go to the library to print the tcharts and zscore charts which you will need for class. I highly recommend showing up to his office hours for tutoring, he is very helpful.

great guy, lectures well, funny and approachable if this class is an elective, DO TAKE HIM, you'll have fun and pass the class in breeze but I won't recommend him to CompSci major students cuz you won't learn much from him having exam reviews halts people from actually studying the materials and group HW meant that not everyone types the codes

Prof H is awesome and a very PUNny guy!! Very easy to understand when you do not come from a computer science background. He makes the class fun and I always look forward to his lectures.

BEST PROFESSOR EVER! would take this class again. I took math 10 with him and I got A in all of my tests so I did not need to take final at all since he drops the lowest grade. I recommend his class to everybody.

I took him for cs36, cs37, math30, and math 31. He's an extremely easy professor. Getting an A in his classes is almost a given. If you really want to take care of your gpa, take him.

Hochwald is really nice, funny professor but makes the class easy even for an illiterate third grader. Half the class is on their phones during lectures and only copying notes without actually listening. Exams are IDENTICAL to the exam reviews, so everyone just memorizes the reviews, aces the exams, while never actually learning the material.

Great professor. For someone who has no background in programming he has a way of explaining things that make sense for a complete noob. If you have no background in programming, Prof. H makes things easier to understand and explains all the tech lingo. Would definitely take again for future programming classes.

Great professor. He is very friendly and funny teacher, so his classes are interesting. I especially liked Discrete Mathematics that was very useful. Professor recommended but did not require doing Homework for Discrete Math. However, if you do all assignments, it will be very useful. It helped me on Data Structure.

if you are new to coding you'll fall behind especially if you're put in a group with experienced coders who can do the homework for you. everything on the review before the test is what is put on the test. wouldn't recommend to anyone who genuinely wants to learn about this archaic code.

This is my first time taking Hochwalde for two classes. I was reluctant at first because he was "too easy" and I was scared I wouldn't learn. I would still recommend Loke over him for taking C programming, but Hochwalde is very helpful, very quick to responding to emails and a very understanding professor. If you have the option, take him

PROS - pretty funny at times, entertaining - very easy A - drops lowest exam score CONS - exams are really easy as the exam reviews are identical to the exam, so you WON'T learn and retain anything from the class - only does the easiest problems in class, and tests you on easy problems - you won't learn much in this class due to low bar set by him

Comment:

Professor Hochwald is a great guy with a good sense of humor. However, regarding this class, I found it to be a bit more challenging than I thought, but very interesting. As a result, I will be taking python and visual basic next semester as those courses will give me the basics I need to succeed in Computer Science. Great professor and nice guy.

Dr. Hochwald is a very unique teacher. He brings a lot of spirit to classroom, which is rare in the computer science field. He does a very good job of bringing some life to a major that can at times be deadly mundane. He has a large personality which some people may find overbearing but compared to the other CS staff at IVC he is truly a godsend.

Prof H teaches w/o a req. bk., has students learn by coding along w/ him in class & students form small groups for homework. Has students learn by trying everything themselves. I took multiple classes with Seth and I have to say he is the best of the best. He really cares about his students and he is very passionate about computer science making it great for the students. I would highly recommend him !
