Comment:

Do not take this class if you are not willing to participate every single class. Participation is worth 20% of the grade and he is not afraid to give people zeros in this category. On a lighter note Howard is a very funny professor. He is an expert on the texts and as long as you read enough to participate in class, you should get an A.

Comment:

Professor Howard changed the way I think about the world and the people around me. He's inspiring, funny, and cares about his students!! I really enjoyed being in his class. If you're alright with participating once a class, and put in the effort on the essays, you'll do well! Participation is *key* to getting a good grade (he says this upfront)!

If you are an athlete take him. Definitely favors athletes over others. Pretty easy class, and don't need to do work in order to get a B. However, you have to have some connection with him to get an A.

Howard only had 5 assignments all year, but they were each very open-ended and a bit confusing. His lectures were all over the place, and while they were sometimes interesting, they usually did not connect to the readings.

This professor is amazing I would totally take a class with him again! Really interesting to take modernity with him I learned a lot and changed my world perspective truly.

This man cares for his students. Even if you never take a class with him go into his office and say hi just because. Do your readings, listen in class, and put effort into his assignments and you will probably be very happy with your grade in the end. He's a straight-forward guy

Howard is a great person, but not so great of a professor. He favors athletes, so if you are not one, it might be hard to connect with him. He grades very subjectively, and does not give much reason for his grades. BUT, it is very easy to get by - you don't have to read. Just show up and say something interesting. GREAT GUY, cares about students.

Comment:

Howard is the best professor and best human at Colgate. He understands students on another level. He doesn't assign a lot of work, and if you try you will get an A. DEFINITELY take any class with Howard. He is soooo smart, lectures are intriguing and never boring. I don't want to be dramatic, but Core 151 changed my life thanks to him.

He loves athletes, like loooves athletes. If you are one and need an easy class I would highly recommend this. He singles you out often to talk about your sport and hardly ever talks about the class material and from what I can see often gives you better grades on papers too.

Professor Howard is very easy, you never have to actually do the readings. His grade is 20% participation which is hard to do because he talks most of the class. He is interesting, but 90% of the class is unrelated to the course material, but not a bad professor for CORE. He's easy, the class isn't painfully slow, what more could you ask for?

he knows a lot about everything, not only his area teaching. Not too hard to get an A. Just basically read little bits that you can refer to in class. Talk once in a while, if you can. He spends the majority of the class talking.

Pretty awful. "Discussion based", but he literally rambles for an hour and fifteen minutes about his thoughts and beliefs. Gained literally NOTHING in terms of intellectual knowledge. Grades based on some non-existent scale, and ends up screwing people over. Do what you can to avoid this joke of a teacher.

Howard is incredibly vague in his expectations and yet very specific when he is grading. Uses the class as a means of preaching his personal beliefs and doesn't allow for much participation even though a decent portion of your grade is based on participation. For a CORE class he is a very hard grader, and is proud that nobody can get an A.

Class felt like a bad high school class. Underwhelming, even for a core. Class conversations are obnoxiously simple, and the professor is almost never insightful. He will proclaim that idiotic comments are brilliant, and the number these comments is inflated by his participation policy that crowds out any thoughtful conversation. Easy, but painful.

Howard is the best professor in Colgate. Unlike other professors, he knows much about everything, not only his area teaching. Not too hard to get an A if you read a reasonable amount of the books and talk once in a while.
