Comment:
Ostrenga can be a good teacher if you really want to work for your grades but not if you want an easy A. Sometimes his lectures were pointless but he would quiz us on things he said anyways and other times he just complained about the class before us and how they never did any work. I learned a lot in his class but also felt like a waste of time

If you are truly interested in writing take him. If you just need English to move on with your degree RUN AWAY. First 10-15 mins of class: Him angrily writing on board, next 45 mins: Over explaining 1-2 "somewhat relevant" things, Last bit of class: Keep on teaching ever though class ended 10 mins ago. Oh yeah and don't buy the book. It' worthless.

Very tough grader. Only assign 4 essays the entire semester and what grade you receive is based on his opinion and style of writing. You must show up to class if you want to know specificly what he wants to see in your paper, if you don't use what he wants he will down grade you. Very rude and unfriendly.

Yes, Dr. Ostrenga is a tough grader. He sets the bar high and isn't going to lower it because you don't want to work for it. He makes time for students that need help and are willing to ask for it. This is a course for people who want to learn how to write, not people who want to slack off. Excellent professor.

He really knows his English and is a tough grader because he wants students to succeed and be prepared for writing college papers in the future. He offers helpful group sessions with other students where he almost tells you exactly what he wants. However, if English isn't your thing or you don't care, then DO NOT take his course.

Was very rude and monotone. Didn't make class enjoyable at all. Was a very hard grader and since we only turned in a few things, it was hard to get a good grade in the class.

Knows his stuff about English. Packs a 2 semester course in 1 semester. Miss homework and you are screwed. Only 4 main assignments. If you don't do good on those you are screwed. Thought I was doing good, had it peer checked by friends, prior students, and family. Still failed. Tough to do what he wants you to do.

This professor is unclear in expectations, very disorganized and teaches through failure. Often grade detrimental assignments took weeks to return, during which he would then teach on things that should have been learned previous to the assignment being due. Unclear expectations. Unclear direction. Unclear syllabus. Prepare to be frustrated.

I would not suggest you take his classes. I thought he was very disorganized. He didn't even stick to the sylabus that he handed out on day one. He gives no clear rubric when it comes to papers. Also does not give a clear due date ahead of time which doesn't work with someone with a busy schedule. Next time Im doing my research before I take classe

Calls on students who never raised their hands, and makes fun of them for lack of knowledge. Yeah, that's helpful. He is rude, and frequently late to class. I don't know how he got tenure... Papers are long and difficult. Good luck.

Great Prof, really knows what he's doing. He's slow to speak but when he does every word is specifically chosen for absolute clarity. Great professor if you actually want to write correctly. If not, you're in for a bad time.

If you have to take this class please don't take it with him! He will make fun of you in class if you don't have the answer he was looking for, he requires a lot of participation which is a good thing but his condescending tone and crazy grading will make you want to drop. I would suggest you stay away from this guy!

One of the most memorable teachers I've had. If you want an easy A this isn't your teacher. He'll make you work for it and if he thinks you're not he'll call you out on it. He's very strict but it's only because he wants you to learn. Show that you're willing to try and you'll be his favorite student. He's willing to spend his free time helping.

The material is unorganized and difficult to follow. He's extremely knit picky with papers and overly critical. Ridiculously harsh grader and demeaning tone in his comments. Need this class for my degree but regret taking this course with this teacher in particular.

If you pay attention, and get over the fact he repeats everything a dozen times, he is actually a very good teacher. Even though he is a VERY tough grader. He is very helpful and friendly when you talk to him in his office. I actually learned a lot - even though it was just an English class.
