If I could take his classes every semester, I definitely would! No homework, no projects, no essays. All you do is take 3 exams (the last exam is your final) and two map quizzes. He hands out everything on Canvas, DO THE STUDYGUIDES. Be prepared to take notes, bring a small snack to class. You can use notes during the test! Such an amazing person!

The last thing I want to do is give a negative review, but I have struggled in this class from the beginning. Im typically good at math but cannot understand his lectures. Does not follow syllabus at all, changes due dates for everything, unprofessional attitude towards students which was not appreciated. Thats just my experience though.

Professor Hafer's lectures are loaded with personal anecdotes and random instances of information. He is very passionate about Geography in general. I highly recommend reading the textbook for this class as the exams are filled with questions that you won't find answered from his powerpoint lectures. There is no final exam.

Good professor, does not use Canvas often which makes it hard to know your grade. Taking notes on literally anything and everything during lectures will help. Tests are open note.

Prof. Hafer gives students plenty of ways to succeed in his class. He offers study guides, old test to review, and creates clear expectations. He informs you of your progress and even projects class grades on the projector (using your SID for anonymity). Email him if your going to miss class; he responds ALWAYS. You get what you put into his class.

He presents himself as stern and grumpy but he is one of the most interesting and funny people I've had the pleasure of meeting. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he might seem scary and scowl as he answers but he gives concise and helpful answers every time. Textbook is not essential but is a great supplement. Great study guides, Fun Extra Credit.

Took his oceanography class and learned a great deal. You will need a textbook and actually read to pass his class. If you do the study guides you will do just fine. Great teacher, would definitely recommend.

He is a wonder professor, and has a truly amazing gift for inspiring people. I took his class my second semester at Southwestern, and I think he is still one of the best professors I've had (after 8 semesters including summer). If you like learning about the natural world, take this class. He can be a tough grader, but nothing is beyond doing.

Professor Hafer is a real gem, he gets his funny sarcasm from his military service in the Navy. He's a funny guy and keeps the lectures interesting. Lots of map tests but he does warn you what to study. He gives you study guides for exams and they truly help if you do them. He is well-traveled and well tell you some interesting facts.

TAKE HIS CLASS ! He does lecture throughout his whole class but provides study guides which are pretty much exactly as the test and lets you use them for the test. He also does give out a lot of extra credit and it really is not hard to pass his class. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE HIM.

Hafer is a decent professor. He lectures all class put tries to put some humor into the lectures. Most of his jokes are dad jokes but he tries. He is a sweet man who is really interested in this topic which makes it easier to sit through. Study guides are provided and they are almost the exact same test.

I am in the eleventh week of my semester and I have not missed one class and from my experience Hafers has a sense of humor that discourages students from asking questions. The material covered in class is scattered and doesnt relate to test or quizzes. When I leave class I research everything myself because I have no idea what he is talking about

My advice, take the class & be prepared to work EXTREMELY hard. Do all the bonus q's. Do ask HIM for help after class, Do get help for the * MATH* problems in this class, Do get help from the MATHCENTER. This class is not for slackers. You will love Prof. Hafer & his dry sense of humor, but his class is EXTREMELY hard! otherwise, run away!

Oceanography with Hafer was great. Is an overall good teacher. He always tries to be funny during his lectures so it's never super boring. Reading the book does help ALOT. 3 test during the semester. Pretty easy if you study material. It was open notes for me also. I'm taking another one of his classes this semester!!

Very smart and his lectures are very very interesting. If your just graduating high school and are only interested in partying and getting easy A's you should probably keep looking. He is the best prof I've had in three semesters here. takes a boring topic and makes it awesome! Very fun dry sense of humor. he keeps it real. has my utmost respect!

Very dry dry humor... Like a desert... an okay guy but he goes on these tangents and sometimes it is too much to handle. The class content is really confusing and the way he explains it is even worse.

Another Professor who spends the whole time talking about random topics and when you get the test, he hasn't even touched on half of the material. He was upset at our class because no one participated very much but he was so scatterbrained that it was hard for the class to pay attention! I constantly heard people complaining that he was off topic.

I thought he was a nice guy until after we took the teacher evaluation and then he was rude. We never had hw just EC we could do if we wanted but he didn't give a lot of points. I attended every class btw. I just got a C. I guess he doesn't like to give high grades for hard working students. (which I am)

Professor Hafer's class has been the best class I have attended at SWC. He is funny with some dry humor, explains everything in detail and don't be afraid to ask a question and pay attention along with taking plenty of notes. LISTENING is key to any course and Professor Hafer makes that very simple for everyone. :-)
