Comment:

Avoid taking him, for your own sanity. His lectures aren't very informative and by the time he's halfway through he's lost 80% of the class. Space out for even a second and you'll be completely lost. Need huge binder for all the random papers he gives, composition notebook with DETAILED notes/projects. 15hrs field and 2 major projects (microteach).

Chapter readings, no exams, chapter notes are a must, notebook check and binder check are a huge junk of your grade. 15 field hours with A MAJOR TASKSTREAM ASSIGNMENT! He's a lenient grader and expects a lot of reflections & notes but he's fair. Class is SUPER LONG but you get some fun science experiments. Tedious workload, but I'd take him again.

Comment:

He is really passionate about science and wants you to learn. He does give A LOT of work though, I have never had a professor give so much homework before. Keep up with your science notebook and binder because he checks those! He accepts late assignments and is very flexible with due dates. He's not bad, just do all your work and you'll pass.

There is a lot of work!! But if you are prepared to pace yourself and complete it all you can get an A, the work is not hard but there is a lot. He has notebook and binder checks where he expects you to continuously write class and chapter notes, in the binder you must store all papers and work he has given.

This class had hidden content. I felt like I learned nothing during SCE 4310. I took the Subject area while I was taking 4311(I took both with him). I passed, and let me tell you, all of the things on that test are things he teaches, you just don't realize it at the time. Be in class to take notes every day. Be organized. That's all there is to it.

I love Professor O'Brien! He's great and gives you chances to help your grades in assignments. He does collect and grades thoroughly a science notebook for a midterm grade and at the end of the semester he collects your science notebook and binder so you must be organized. This class is a lot of fun and I would recommend it to anyone!

Ok so he definitely utilizes class time so don't expect short classes. He does a lot of fun activities in class so attendance & participation is a MUST for the sake of your grade. KEEP JOURNAL UP. No test or quizzes. You can correct work & resubmit for a better grade, assignments are simple just follow directions from syllabus & you will get an A.

Professor is super boring. I recommend anyone to only take him in the summer. He cuts the work in half. His fieldwork assignments are super long. He is a good teacher he is just Sooooo boring! Easy A. He says you need he textbook to read the chapters but I never bought it and didn't ready any chapters and got an A.

I can see why students think he is boring yes he talks but he is passion of what he does a nerdy professor he likes science notebook he gives so much handout that are useful info. some activities to do the only thing that I did not like is going to Coral Park some times FIU & he was not clear with the work but he is an easy A no stress recommend

Professor O'Brien really goes the distance for his students. He must spend a ton of money on making copies and organizers for us. You can tell how much the subject matter means to him. There is A LOT of work, but you'll find that with whoever you take. Frankly, if you're afraid of school work, you probably shouldn't be in school. Just saying.

I loved taking this course with O'Brien! He wasn't very clear about assignments a lot of the time, but all of the work he assigned (mostly reflections) were all relevant to the class. We did a ton of cool activities in class, like make roller coaster models, cars, pendulums, planting, etc. We also went out to the nature preserve!

I am currently in the last week of this class and I have to say that Professor O'Brien is an amazing person. More than just grading papers, he actually cares about his students and wants them to be great teachers. I admit that instruction is not very clear but if you read his update page which he updates EVERY class you will be fine!

Take him! He is a wonderful person, sweet and genuine.. He really deserves a lot more credit that others on here give him. Yes- he talks-ALOT he will keep you until the last minute of class & there are tons of assignments... But really- he accepts your work and effort just as it is & above all else he is an easy grader. Patience! It's worth the A!

The most boring class of my life. 3 hours felt like an eternity. I learned nothing science education related. He is all about HoM and "journaling". You write journals for every class. Reflections on chapters in the text, do useless assignments, and he is so unclear you have no idea how to do anything!! THANKFULLY, he is a very easy grader.

He is the most BORING professor that I have even come across. You learn absolutely nothing in this class. The assignments are easy and he allows you to turn them in late. Soooo much busy work in this class. He made us sign up to a website to do assignments, there are 20 and each has at least 4 parts. He is lesser of two evils regarding professors.

This class was such a bore!!! So much busy work you learn nothing! You become an expert in concept maps thats for sure. The mini science projects in class were so peddy! He lovesss to talk till the last minute! Cant stand him! And taskstream? Yea exactly what everyone says he gives it last minute!

omg he's such a bore! How he loves to talkkkk! Literally stuck there till the end of class. And the work? so much useless busy work! I didnt learn anything!!! and yes gives the taskstream assignment last. I have never been so annoyed by a teacher. I NEVER want to see a concept map AGAIN!!!!

DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! He gave us the taskstream portfolio assignment 2 weeks before finals week, he did not even check to make sure it was done properly before we uploaded. Very boring! The final exam was all short answers or long responses to chapters he did not even assign!! STAY AWAY if you can!

HORRIBLE! Very boring, tons of useless busy work, teaches and treats you as if you were students in an elementary science class rather than college students attempting to learn how to teach science. The only info I learned pertaining to this class I learned in my field work classroom doing the two teaching assignments and helping. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE

Professor O'Brien is horribly boring & although he makes you do many elem science experiments in class you don't learn many methods of how to teach science. I felt more like I was taking an elem science class rather than taking an education course. He also assigns so much busy work! If you want to enjoy learning to teach sci- take someone else!
