Taking his class over winter term, he was one of the best professors I have had. He's relatable, knowledgable, and has so many experiences he shares throughout the class, making each topic covered so much more valuable. I would highly recommend anyone who is looking for a sports journalism professor to sign up for Hank's class!

Great guy, extremely knowledgeable in his profession. I took him for Sports Issues and I believe that it was good having him as a professor for this subject with all of the things he's been involved with in sports. Takes the time to explain and engage the entire class. Participation is key to making his classroom flow.

Mixed feelings. Genuine and nice person, but not a good teacher. Doesn't strike me as completely coherent in front of a class. Biggest problem is that he frequently uses his own niche i.e., hazing, as an effort to articulate his points, which gets old after awhile. There are other reporters and examples to glean and learn from.

I found it hard to separate the stories from the things we were actually supposed to be learning. We kind of jumped all over the place, which also made the information confusing. The class had strong ties to journalism, which I wasn't expecting but makes sense, making it a little more difficult for me since I was just taking it for a LA req.

Hank's classes are not a cake walk. His classes do as they're supposed to and help prepare you for the future. Those people on here who are negative likely didn't do their work and didn't participate. Hank truly has interest in each student and is a great prof and even better person.

This is the professor you take not for the class he is teaching but for the lifelong relationship with him. He takes an intense interest in his students and he makes sure they do their best. He is a true teacher in that he makes his students strive to actually learn. The bashers on here probably didn't want to do that.

Prof Nuwer is a writer himself, so he knows what he's teaching, unlike some professors who haven't really worked in the real world. He'll be critical, but not mean and it's more to help you than anything else. Very personable, hard class but he's wonderful. :) He pointed me 2 work fields I didn't know about, and even suggested some internships. :D

His style is a little different but he challenges students to actually work which is apparently too difficult for some JOU 101 kids who will likely drop out anyways... ever heard of cramer's media law? Not really easy. So do yourself a favor and take Hank.

He doesn't know what he's talking about, and he can't communicate in a way that makes you understand either. Nobody knows what's going on, EVER. And he assigns grades depending on how much he likes you, not your performance. Really, you'll never learn anything from this man...except the URL of his personal homepage.

Hank is the most in-the-clouds prof I have ever had the displeasure of taking. He doesn't have a clue how to relate to students or make the material comprehensible. He's a disgrace to an otherwise really wonderful journalism department. To his defense, he's a super nice guy who would do anything for you...teaching just isn't his strong suit.

Terrible professor. A really nice guy, but he's absolutely dreadful in the classroom. If you're going to major in journalism, pick a track other than news/ed -- you'll still get a journalism degree and you'll be able to avoid his awful classes. Otherwise you'll spend a whole lot of time learning absolutely nothing. Avoid him if at all possible.

Love this guy. He's great. Yes, he pushes his students hard and encourages them to use their own resources to solve problems, but that is what future journalists will have to do, so you can't hold that against him. Really, a great guy. Take his class.
