All I can say is I didn't read a single thing in Greek Myth. It's not my thing, I sparknoted every work the night before and rocked solid grades on essay exams. For some reason he looks more intimidating than he is, but most of his lectures are actually pretty interesting. He relates to modern issues frequently, which I enjoyed.

I wish I had taken the classes I had with Prof Rhodes. He is absolutely brilliant minded. One thing he said has stuck with me: "You think college is hard.. College is easy. You get to wear what you want, do what you want, eat in class, wear pajamas... It's outside of college that's hard. Life after college is all about conformity." He was right.

Rhodes is indeed brilliant. Yet he is also perhaps one of the most authentic and sensitive human beings you will ever meet. Be engaged. If you do the readings and participate in the discussions, you will learn much from him. He will show you how to look at a text like no one else.

Dr. Rhodes is absolutely brilliant. He can be intimidating, but he's actually very funny (if you appreciate dry humor). To the person who said all females get a grade with a minus after it--false. To the person who called him a "hypocrit"-learn to spell. Keep up with the readings & participate, and you'll be fine. It's worth the work.

This professor is brilliant!! I have ever met anyone like him. Take his class you won't regret it. He isn't an easy grader but his lectures are inspiring and interesting. He really knows how to open your mind, helping you improve your interpreting skills.

I'm in Chaucer right now, and I knew it'd be a challenge.. but this is beyond hard. I tend to think of myself as a strong writer, and I've gotten a C- and a C+ on both essay assignments so far. It's unfair because I really am trying very hard, and taking down everything he says in class, and I'm still not doing well, so....

A brilliant mind. It is easy to feel intimidated by one who is that much smarter, but the best thing to do is to embrace his intelligence and try to absorb it. I really found him to be quite entertaining...my kind of wiseguy!

Tell him that you love the Christmas movie, "It's a Wonderful Life." Tell him you blindly follow everything the Bible says and take the stories completely literally. Tell him that the Pardoner's Tale is the most boring in the Canterbury Tales. If you do these three things you will be his favorite student for sure!

Professor Rhodes is one interesting character study. To start with, the guy is brilliant. He is also a very deep individual who you could really talk to and he'd listen and care. The first day of class he may appear intimidating but it is just a facade; similar to the kind his favorite story teller, the pardoner, puts on. Take this class.

Rhodes knows a lot about his field, and is worth taking for that reason alone. His style stands out at Southern, but would be considered typical at a different kind of place. If you don't participate, he gets frustrated. If you're taking Chaucer, take History of the English Language first--it will prepare you better.

I was lost the entire semester. I tend to think that I'm pretty smart, but a lot of his references were WAY over my head. He was nice enough, just a little too "over-the-top" for a university requirement. Not sure if I would recommend to a friend.

I can honestly say the class wasn't that bad and if you participate or ask for help. Professor Rhodes will assist you. I had him twice and he has helped me on improving my response papers. I only reccomend this class if you are trully up to the challenge in reading chaucer and discussing the material.Otherwise I had no problem.

nothing formally assigned..all up for assumption. seems to not care because nobody talks in class...which is understandable..but not a good reason to not require attendance and in fact encourage you NOT to go if you aren't "interested". that attitude made me not interested in his course.

Prof Rhodes is the best teacher out there. He is funny and makes you think about real life and what is really happening in the world. He is a true teacher and not just some old crank who despises their job. I think i have a crush on him. Participate!!!

I thought Mr. Rhodes was a very helpful professor and he let me edit my paper for a better grade. If you attend his class and actually participate in his discussions then he will take notice of you. If you just sit and stare then you will be bored and eventually get insulted. Don't take this class if you are going to be bored.

Jim Rhodes is beyond brilliant and his class was extremely engaging. Yeah, it is challenging and you have to work your butt off to get an A, it it well worth it. He seems tough at first, but he's really a sweet guy. You just have to actually read and show interest...and he'll LOVE ya!

Comment:
How someone so mean can be so full of himself only goes to prove that bad professors are bad people. He doesn't care about students only his own sense of brilliance. Avoid him at all costs.
