Really interesting class. Also really tough grader but he explains himself and allows you to improve. If you want to learn and improve your writing, take him.

Personally, I think he's a good professor. He's very picky when it comes to papers and of course strict grade so don't take him if you wanna play around in English class. You need to read the novels, write papers on time, attendance is a must! It was a very interesting class. Would take him again.

professor maerhofer seems intimidating but he really wants you to learn. very left politically. he was very helpful when I went to speak with him about my writing.

totally changed how I understand and write about literature. very approachable outside of class if u take time to see speak with him. definitely a Marxist and makes u want to see the world critically.

Hated this class. He was unclear about most stuff, he'd assign a Hw and then after call it our draft and expect the essay due in a week. He gets mad when no one participates. Tough grader and very political. Doesn't teach much about writing. He literally told us his job isn't to teach us but to continue with his research.

If you're looking to write about interesting topics rather than the typical college curriculum, then you should take his class. He gets you to really think about your own writing however, if you are not already a decent writer, I wouldn't recommend taking him. He won't teach HOW to write, just how to build upon the skills you already have.

Good person, bad professor. Activist. Doesn't grade your politics, but doesn't refrain from mentioning his in class. Makes the class quiet because of it. Knows his stuff, so if you can endure his (sometimes radical) opinions, go ahead. Papers are easy, readings can vary. Participate even if you're wrong! Might rant about Trump.

He curses a lot but in a funny manner!! He is very easy going. Opens your eyes about the world. Not strict on attendance. HE LOVES PARTICIPATION!! The books he chooses are difficult but he really helps you understand the book. Would take again.

Professor Maerhofer is excellent! He has a lot to say and encourages participation from everyone. If you don't want to do your readings and if you don't want to participate, don't bother taking the class. He's really great, has his own opinions, is approachable and ridiculously hilarious. Interesting lectures too. READ AND PARTICIPATE OFTEN.

very bad! talked about politics 90% of the time (the other 10 was him saying we are not engaged enough) graded really hard although its English 110 and there was no actual teaching. It really seems he expects you to know everything before even taking the class. Not recommended.

People complain that there aren't any exams - the class is designed to be a writing course, only. He's very much so politically incorrect, which is great. He provides clear criteria for the essays, and if you do the reading you will be in perfect shape to write the essay.

there is no quiz or test or exam. only writing. if you are really bad at writing, don't take this class. he never checks draft, its only peer checking. off topic really often. ESL student not recommended. he sometimes threatens student he will leave the class if they don't do this or that. horrible professor with Antisocial personality disorder

Strong, captivating teacher. I'd be lying if I said he wasn't highly erudite. Demands active participation from students, lively discussions, which is fair because it's a necessary component of university. Humerous. Highly liberal mindset. Grading is mainly essays, writing assignments. Impactful educator that truly challenges the student.

He is a really great professor. I had him for poetry and got an A- which is amazing since poetry has never come easy to me. He keeps the material interesting and relevant. I would take him again and highly recommend taking his classes

You have to show up to class and do the readings. 2 shorter papers, 1 research paper, annotated bibliography, 1 page portfolio. Assignments can be unclear, ask for clarification if you need it. If you do what he wants he does not grade harshly. Not that hard. He really counts participation so make sure you are involved in class discussions.
