Mia was definitely the best professor Ive ever had at Southern. She always gives the best feedback and she doesnt try to fix things on your art herself (like some professors do). The homeworks and in class assignments were always fun. I looked forward to the class every Tuesday and Thursday. Pick her for any class she teaches, shes amazing

When it came time to do the master copy, she'd tell students that what they wanted to do was too simple or too hard, and then got mad at them when they hadn't chosen what painting to reproduce. She'll make students scrape off their ENTIRE painting off of the canvas and redo it. Great way to humiliate people...

Mia Brownell is a great professor to take any art class with. She is a respected artist and gives good feedback and advice to her students on their art and academics. She talks a lot during class time but its usually important stuff the students need to know. She is friendly and the atmosphere in the classroom is as well.

Her techniques are inconsistent. She'll let the new painters do paintings they don't have the skill-set to accomplish, and make experienced painters do things which are below their level. She can be impolite, or overly chipper. Her advice is confusing, like "watch out for the greens", whatever that means.

Doesn't seem to care whether homework gets done or not. Pretty much judges you on day one as artist or not. Really expensive class so Beware.

Um guess what she has read all these comments and has adjusted to the harsh critics...I asked her lol. She's very good. Added more demos but yes strict on absences. Sits down with every student for feedback. Shes honest but guess what you want to be babied get paint by numbers. you want to learn more pick up a book and pratice yourself. take HER!!!

I can't remember what course I took however all I have to say is that if you are SERIOUS about art, take Mia. She pushes you so hard because she wants the best from all of her students. She requires you to THINK!

Way over the top regarding absense or lateness. Assignments were very confusing. No demos or actually teaching before projects were due - only extreme critiques afterwards. She really pushes you so you do improve, but it's really the hard way!!

Mia is a great teacher! This intro drawing class had me very nervous because I've never drawn before. Mia grades based on improvement and use of technique. There's a lot of outside of class hours, but the in-class hours are extremely helpful to do homework. She encouraged me to keep working! I'm going to take her as much as possible :)

Mia is really helpful if you know what your doing and know the right questions to ask. As long as you do your work and try your hardest she is a very fair grader. The only thing that really bothers her is if you miss class a lot and goof off when you should be working.

I initially thought that Mia was too precise with palette/color expectations, but I soon found out that the lessons that I learned, concerning mixing colors, was invaluable. This is a must have class for anyone interested in oil painting!Mia has high expectations, but with her instruction, are easily attainable and very gratifying!
