Professor Luther had hype most profound impact on my college career. If anyone wants to understand the Russia of today his classes are a must. He actually was in Moscow at The time the Gemans were approaching in the winter of 1941. Not easy to find a professor like that.

This is the best lecturer ive ever had in my college career. He is engrossing, capitvating and even shares bits about his life going to school in communist Russia. He demands respect, and i wish he was still teaching. He was very old and you can see he was still teaching for the love of history. A lot of people hate him, i found him truly inspiring

Seriously the most understood teacher. Just make notes on the readings and attend class. It will help you out on the tests which are easy if you do both. Comes off like an **** but is actually nice. if u do the following you will learn to appreciate going to school and earning your grade

Taking his class depends on what kind of student you are... if you are not good at taking notes in class or reading the readings I would not recommend taking his class ... attendance does not matter but if you want to do well GO! And if you can't take sarcasm avoid him he has no boundaries with what he will say.

He is an excellent lecturer. I am a good note-taker and got his lectures down word for word. However, he doesn't give any study guides and the exams are essay format. The questions could be anything so I had to memorize my notes word for word which was very time consuming. I didn't have time left to study the txtbk and each exam has a txtbk questio

Prof. Luther is by far my favorite professor of all because of his deep knowledge of the subject, 60 years of expertize in Russian and European history, teaching style and sense of humor. He is not an easy grader, and although he does not assign papers, many find his 4-essay exams (for upper-level courses) a challenge.Flip-side: you learn a ton.

Gives ridiculous amount of notes every class. Goes through the material so quickly that there are times when I absolutely cannot write fast enough, making it impossible to get down all of his points. 50% of tests are on a thick book of documents which are absolutely NEVER discussed. Is unhelpful at his office hours. Wouldn't recommend him.

If you don't enjoy lecture, don't take it. The whole class is lecture, with outside reading, but he is so knowledgeable and takes such care crafting wonderful, complete lectures that it is a delight. Definitely some writers cramp, and he has no patience for stupidity and people who ask questions to hear themselves speak. Rec. for serious students

Professor Luther was one of the best professors I ever had. His method is rigorous, and the knowledge he imparts excellent. He has prepared me well, and I am now succeeding in law school, thanks, in large part, to the excellence of his teaching. If you want an easy A, or to sit passively without learning a thing, don't take his class.

He has to be one of the sweetest, most interesting Professor's I have ever taken. His lecture can be a little daunting at first but he is fascinating. He referred to himseld as a "Relic of Soviet Europe". I am so glad I am taking this man before he retires.

Leaves no room for discussion. Lecutures for the enire period. His teaching style is old fashioned, but i found his readings and presentation interesting. Very tough grader. Gives two exams, fail one and u fail the course. Do not take this course if you're looking for an easy A.

Luther teaches Russian history, and the main thing the student learns is what it is like to be in a gulag once a week. He knows his subject thoroughly, but he is a terrible teacher. AVOID LUTHER!

Professor Luther definitely knows his stuff - it's obvious he's an intelligent guy and an expert in his field. However, teaching is not for him. As other says, he belittles students and makes people wary of asking simple questions - he made me cry. He approaches his subject in a very dry manner. The reading is also intense. I'd avoid his class.
