HE SCARED ME AT FIRST! Hard grader, but you get what you give. He makes you want to be in class and its a class worth taking! He creates a Really comfortable environment for a comm class. I was shaking the first presentation but the book and the way he conducts class gave me confidence and I improved my communication skills for sure .

Severson has extremely high expectations of all of his students. He expects amazing writing and speaking and is NOT open to feedback. If you want a A you have to do the two extra credit assignments or else it is impossible. I went to a school dedicated to presentations and public speaking and still did not do great. Seriously would not recommend.

Passing The class should solely be based on PUBLIC SPEAKING !!!NOT!!! PAPER WORK!!! college should focus on subject less on whether it would be used in a work field or what ever.

He is honestly a good teacher and wants the best for his students. He gives lots of work which makes it feel like its a 4 unit class. Test are take home and answers are on books and notes. One chance for extra credit. Group work is mediatory but I loved my group.

Prof Severson is an amazing professor. His class gives a UC or CSU feel but in a community college environment. Which means he challenges you and has incredible feedback if you're willing to put in the time and effort. He is extremely approachable and just an excellent instructor overall!! 10/10 recommend him!!

Prof. Severson is a comm guru. His lectures are really thought provoking, and he likes you to come to office hours. He's there for you. Otherwise, lookout. I wrote a total of 76 pages! Extra credit isn't optional if you want an A. Amount of work is INSANE. Your fate is sadly tied to your group. Choose your group wisely. Very tough class for 3 units

Really enjoyed this challenging class. Class was graded on 5 speeches based on outlines, group work, conventions, and presentation, as well as 5 takehome exams. Stay on top of deadlines and buy the book and you'll be fine. DON'T be late. Be prepared for group project meetings outside of class + lots of writing. Made me a much better public speaker!

He is a very nice teacher who really cares about his students. He gives really good feedback. He gives 5 point quizzes (warm-up questions) every class. In Comm 301 he assigns about 4 speeches and some with outlines that have very specific guidelines that he wants. Overall he is a great teacher, pretty easy, just do the work and you will be fine.

his assignments are super old. he says they "are for you" to improve your interpersonal communication. They are so irrelevant. Find a new career, you clearly do not know how to organize a class off a schedule nor do you want to grade anything. retire or quit 2018

His assignments and due dates are not clear at all. He has random pop quizzes on the textbook but this is a college level class, not middle school. His tests are all open answer and vague but requires specifics..? He is usually late and has had subs multiple times. He should teach 7th grade at best.

He teaches very well and you will learn the skills to be a more effective communicator. However, consider this professor your last option. He grades unfairly (I speak for myself and my entire class). If he sees you as a strong presenter, he will grade you harshly. However, you quiver and cry during your presentation, he'll grade you lightly. Lol

He is definitely unorganized. No study guides for any quizzes or exams. He is a really funny teacher but the amount of groupproject he wants us to put in into our groups is honestly ridiculous. Be aware of community service and lots of hours spent outside of class with your group and even working on papers that are hard to do but shouldn't be -.-

Overly tough grader. Exams poorly written. Too much group work. You can spend hours on the homework finding the EXACT answers in the textbook, and he'll still find a way to mark you down. You can lose an entire letter grade on a speech due to ONE aspect out of many that go into presenting a speech. For a 3 unit class this is honestly absurd.

If you're thinking about taking this professor, DON'T. His class at first seems easy but then makes it completely hard. He marks you down a whole letter grade if you are even a second over or a second under the speech time limit. For the information and persuasive speech he does not allow you to use google to look up your topic. DON'T TAKE HIM.

Getting an A is possible, but you'll have to work your butt off for it. Grade is based on homework assignments for each of the ten chapters and tests he gives every 3-4 chapters. Test Q's come from lecture and textbook readings and are VERY specific. He grades hard too.

Severson intimidates his students more than he actually teaches. He tests using materials from the book and his lecture. Book materials are very specific, and lecture materials are glossed over and not provided online. Overall, not a good choice for COMM 321.

Severson does not come across as invested in his students at all, nor does he come across as invested in teaching in general. This characteristic extends right down to the fact that his handwriting is ILLEGIBLE and he will never respond to an important email. His grading is overly harsh and will make you fearful of, and hate public speaking.

This class will take a lot of time. You have 4-5 speeches. Most require a 6-7 page outline, and 3 meetings with classmates outside of class. You have 5 lengthy take home exams, weekly pop quizzes, and a final essay that is 7-8 pages. I believe he sets the standards high, so we do our best. Do not expect leniency, you'll get "Welcome to College".

I thought he was an easy teacher. You have to be willing to do the work to pass as with every class. I found it to be the easiest class out of all my classes. Most of the classes are filled with listening to other students present. In my opinion not a lot of work.
