He is a respectful professor, and he made a lot of interesting lectures. I love him so much. However, you have to be aware that a lot reading and harsh grading are coming. Anyway, he is the best professor in history department right now! For SURE!

He was the only lecturer that I had that didn't make me feel bored--not once during the entire semester. If the class was only the lectures, I would take him again. However, the assigned reading and papers are more than tedious. They take a long time to read, aren't always interesting, and papers are graded harshly. Still, love the guy though.

If reading three books and writing on them over the course of the semester seems like cruel and unusual punishment, stop reading this now and take something else. If your willing to put in some effort, get ready to enjoy some of the best lectures you've ever heard. Take at least one course with him before you graduate.

Grading is more harsh than hard, if that makes any sense. If you do the work well, you'll prob get a B, but it's almost impossible to get a solid A. Recommend writing the papers early and getting the prof. to read it over; he'll do it, and it helps. Pop quizzes are very detailed and force you to keep up with rereading your lecture notes.

Why is a 100-level history course significantly harder than a 300-level history course? I've taken 3 history courses at Stony Brook and this class was by far the hardest with the most work. Sure, the professor is a great lecturer but the amount of work is NOT worth it. Would not recommend.

Definitely difficult for a non-history major, but as long as you pay attention, take notes, do the readings, and know how to write a paper well, you should be alright. You get to choose 2 papers to write based on corresponding novels, many of which are very dry & boring, so I suggest starting in advance. Difficult, but doable.

I took the class for personal interest and was not a history major. Probably the hardest class I've had to work for a B+. Still Barnhart is funny and interesting; well worth the effort to go to class. Pop quizzes are hard but the 2 exams and 2 papers are pretty easy if you know what he's looking for.

Barnhart is gift from the heavens to the History department. If you are a History major, make sure you take at least one course with him. His courses are far from easy but worth it. His lectures are very detailed and at times, hilarious. He is a tough grader and it will be hard to get an A but you will not regret taking his classes!

As a psychology student taking this as a dec ... I would suggest this class only to history majors, as it seemed I was the only one who wasnt. Nice guy though. 2 papers, midterm final, 2 pop quizzes (hard)

This professor is awesome, his lectures are interesting and he takes all questions. He will teach you more than you thought you would ever know about WWII. However, this class is mostly taken by history majors. Being a BME major, I seemed to struggle on the essays for the readings. He grades the essays pretty hard.

Brilliant and funny man. Extremely fair grader. 2 pop quizzes, 2 mandatory essays, one midterm and one final. The reading material is for the most part very interesting, the lectures are always intriguing. Don't take this class, or any class with Barnhart, if you expect an easy A. Regardless, his class is completely worth the effort.

He is an awesome professor. If you think you knew about WWII, well he will teach you that you don't. His political jokes get annoying if your a Republican but they only come from time to time. He throws jokes into his lectures all the time to keep you interested. He knows what he is talking about. His grading isn't as difficult as people say.

There are 4 essays for the class, you have to do 2, the others are extra credit. 2 random quizzes that I think are difficult. One midterm on a broad topic and a similar final. He is a hard essay grader, but it is worth it if you are a history major bc he's very smart and knows what he talking about. He structures all his classes like this.

nice enough professor; gives great lectures although his commentary--especially about Bush and Cheney can get annoying. i would only reccommend him if you are a good writer as he is a VERY harsh grader. If you can write well, you should get at least a B, however. There are 5 books required although you only really need to read 2 for essays.

Everyone who said he is a harsh grader is right I don't agree with some of the ways he chooses to grade. Because I was graded poorly My interest to the class didn't receive much of a jump either. I hope everyone else has a better time then I did.

Professor Barnhart is very into his subject but the way he lectures makes you feel like you are actually witnessing the events as they occur. He can be a harsh grader sometimes but he always types out his comments on how you can improve.

Professor Barnhart is an amazing professor. The class is a little tough because of the amount of information you are responsible for. You have ample opportunities to improve your grade. He also gives great lectures with interesting stories! This prof. is a must!
