Comment:

The best painting/art instructor I have ever had. If you are serious about becoming an artist who produces work of relevance for this historical moment, then take this course. He is the legitimate deal. Nick Potter is an amazing artist who is good enough for the best museums and galleries. Warning if you are a slacker think twice.

He doesn't teach anything. He doesn't give any painting demos, lectures, or anything else that can help students learn. He just gives opinions, and he won't support you unless you paint in his style. He has a set of favorite students who he supports, and he criticizes the rest. He also seeks to make students feel insignificant during critiques.

There was never a clear guidance nor a syllabus. When I request his help, there was a never clear critique how to make my painting better. He spends class time on flirting with female students or staring at his laptop.

He is a nice professor. Gives you good feedback on going above and beyond your work, there is always room for improvement. When it comes down to fundamentals on learning how to paint, you're kind of on your own. But he is open to different styles of application. I saw many different techniques from other classmates. Be expressive but also accurate!

Ha! Nick potter writes his own nice reviews! The trip to London is not part of your painting class, it's a summer class that costs $4000. You don't advance anyone, all class long you stare at your apple computer

I was so happy to have been able to take advanced with Nick. The first few weeks of class were observational drawing, which I loved, and we did gradually delve into different techniques. Virtually no one showed up to class most of the time though.

Avoid if possible. Try to take painting classes elsewhere and just transfer units. Not sure what I learnt during his instruction, great for free units -just show up.

A study abroad program to London. Nick was great! Personally took us everywhere on the schedule and even offered personal escort to Hampton Court (day devoted to free roam of the city) & gave us 3 days to do independent, local travelling. He was helpful and insightful when it came to the projects & pointed out key themes during scheduled itinerary.

If u wish to learn anything about the principles and basics of painting- he is not a teacher you want. He doesn't really teach much, mostly gives opinions. Had to learn basics of mixing color and application of meidums from YouTube. Don't fall for his accent :)

if you're serious about painting take him as a prof,you will learn so much!!he is a true ARTISTE! very knowledgable,very helpful but you must be self motivated grades fairly based on attendence and effort. he will push you into making some good art, prepare to spend some money on supplies. if you wan't easier projects take it with the other prof.

If you're serious and motivated, he is a great mentor. You have to fight for his attention in the larger classes, but once he sees you're serious about your work, he'll pay more attention to you. Pretty much what people have said: show up and work hard, you'll do fine. Ditto to the accent :)

He's a PAINTER and a THEORIST, not so much a traditional "teacher." You need to be self-driven and he will come alongside to support you if you ask for it. He treats you like a working artist, which I found to be very helpful. Work hard and you'll do fine. And his accent is totally hot! :D

He is british very young ;) He is a very good proffesor he knows his stuff. He doesn't actually teach you how to paint but he tries to get you comfortable with painting. You have to try and ask help if you need it or else you won't learn. Attendance is a must so he can see how your work is coming together.Great class!

The class seemed a little hard considering it was supposed to be a beginning painting class. He doesnt really help you unless you really ask him to. You are pretty much on your own in this class. He tells you what your project is and the rest is all up to you. Can be helpful if you get his attention and ask for help. I agree with the dreamy accent!

Comment:

I had a GREAT experience in his painting class. He's not a teacher who babysits; if you need help or guidance, you've got to ask for it. Otherwise, he expects you to function as an adult and be able to work on your own. Want to do well in his class? Show up, work hard, and keep him involved with your process. And his accent is DREAMY. :)

I had him just this past semester. He taught me to be more independent and pushed me to be a better painter, both with forms and content. He grades fairly, based on how much effort you put into your work. I just wish he would be more available in the studio and more up-to-date with the grading progress. Overall, a good teacher!

He grades based on if he likes you or not. never give progress reports so you really have no idea how well or awful you are doing. grades unfairly. He gets jealous of students that can paint better than him. Pathetic excuse for a professor really.
