Professor Allen is a very interesting character. While folklore is not the same as learning about rock and roll he does his best to make it exciting and fun. There is a lot to learn from Professor Allen he is a good professor and I would recommend him for sure.

gr8 prof. his class is fun and easy. his also a funny guy.i liked his class.2 papers,midterm,final.1 very easy presentation. gives handouts which are helpful. im a slaker, and still manage to do good in his class. dont be afraid of the presentation, it was rly easy and he gave everyone an A.if u need a upper corc take him! u wont regret it.

Professor Allen is wonderful! He created this new upper core class: global music in America and it is just a pleasant joy. great sounds from all over the world, and its not an elective class! its a great choice for an upper core. One midterm, one final, a small presentation, two papers and attendace - there is your grade.easy class worth taking!!!!

Boring, useless class, It was a waste of time. We sat in the class discussing whether or not an item was folklore or not. Who really cares! For his essays you have to write what he says. The problem is nobody (except for a few) really cares what he says. Do not take him if you don't have to.

It's not a hard class, although it can be difficult to find out what he wants. You have to write four papers and give an oral presentation. Attendance is MANDATORY. He'll frequently keep you past the running time for the class and is often late to class.

This guy really put me through hell in my first semester.. there were about 7 concert reports that had to be 5 pages long and a band report that had to be 10 pages and you had to present it and play music for the whole class.. if i wasn't a music major i would have never taken this class.

If you want an introduction to folklore, this is not the professor for you, He expects you to have the knowledge of a specialist, especially on the fieldwork paper. He tends to interject his own personal experiences into his lectures, sometimes going over the clock. Basically a fair grader, however watch out for the fieldwork research paper.

He doesn't stop talking and he'll always let you out late. If you have no interest in this topic, you won't when you leave the class either. He assumes that everyone loves folklore and starting at the first day of class will call you "folklorists." I do not recommend him unless you really love folklore.

Not such a bad class, I got a B+ and didn't apply myself as much as I could have. Good prof. Should teach some metal though :-P You'd love the Great Kat's guitar shredding Beethoven Mosh (5th Symphony in C minor.) Don't bother with rhapsody, she's not on it. (I know you'll read this)

I like him,he's funny with good sense of humor. You learn and get to listen to music you wouldn't normally. You actually get to enjoy some of it to your own surprise. It wasn't a hard class at all. Just do the work which is simple,and take down notes as he's talking -- just stay up in class and listen. Youll be fine.

I liked him, he is not actually mean, he's sarcastic and witty, not everyone gets it.And to the person below...of course he expects u 2 know music terms, it's a music class, you're just stupid and didn't think you had to do any work. Anyways take him, interesting class, he's kind of hot for his age too. Just don't annoy him and study your notes.
