Dr. Silver is a professor if you like dry humor and Ken Burn's. He doesn't have clear rubrics and grading criteria. It helps to come to class and get the information in class because he uses that on his tests. The books we read were not too bad, just lengthy. Overall, if I had to take another class with him I would.

He's a pretty cool guy. You can get away without reading the textbook, but it's written in an interesting way and class is more fun when you know what's going on.

A great professor! There is a lot of reading, but it's never boring. If you do the readings and the questions that he posts along with them you will prepared for the exams. He also makes very generous study guides for all the exams. You will get a good grade if you show up and do what is expected of you.

Silver's an awesome professor, definitely recommend taking his class. There's a decent amount of reading like any history course but it's really interesting stuff. He's big on the discussion, but class is never boring. Two tests and a short research paper so not much work besides the reading.

I Loved Dr. Silver! He was by far my favorite professor at AppState. If you read the chapters given and participate in class you will do well. Only test we took were the Midterm and final, along with 2 mini reflection papers. If I could take every history class with him i would. If you have the chance take Dr. Silver

Very good teacher, wants to see you excel and offers a lot of back and forth between students. Very funny and sarcastic and likes to challenge you. Only 4 grade 2 of them a book review the other were based on critiques between novel and film. If you do all the papers you will get an A and if you miss one you'll still pass.

Dr. Silver is a wonderful professor. He is sarcastic and that makes class a lot more fun. He is VERY intelligent and I guarantee that you will learn a lot. There are really only four grades in the whole class though (two papers and two exams).

Dr. Silver is the man! People who say he is "rude" don't understand sarcasm. He makes class interesting, and unlike other professors, is here to teach. He cares about student success and is more than willing to look over essay drafts and provide input.

Good teacher. Tends to talk about religious ideals as if they are fact and can be rude but other than that he is a good teacher.

thinks very highly of himself and is prone to calling people out in order to embarrass them publicly. if you can handle this kind of attitude, take his class. he encourages you to expand your thinking and get to know your classmates.

Awesome teacher! I thought this would be some lame environmental class but it was actually the most interesting class I've taken this semester! He really makes you think critically and although there's a lot of reading, I think he's realistic with his assignments. He also helped steer me in the write direction on a paper that turned out very well!

In my top 3 for favorite professor I've ever taken. This is my third class with him. He's entertaining and keeps the class engaged. Reading is big in the class but he's always there with feedback and help if you need it. Definitely recommend him to all history majors.

In the category of my favorite college professors I have had. I'm going to take every class I can with him from here on out. He makes for a fascinating class and will challenge the way you think about history. Of course, if you aren't ready to get uncomfortable sometimes, I guess he'll make you want to drop the class (like a lot of people did).

Dr. Silver is by far my favorite professor. He is knowledgeable and his sarcastic humor keeps the class interesting. Instead of a typical lecture style, he asks for class interaction. He does expect much out of students (attendance, punctuality, preparedness) but it is what a student should already be doing as a history major. A+ for Silver!!!!

Silver is my favorite professor. Taken two classes with him, about to start a third. Gives two exams and two papers: graded fairly if you study and give yourself time on the papers. Helps you outside of class and really wants you to learn. Class is discussion based, be prepared to answer questions. Wheeler Becker book is new Bible. Great class!

Good guy with a great sense of humor. Made learning history a discovery process. He didn't give us all the answers, but expected us to find what the evidence said and follow that to facts.

He's definitely difficult. But his intentions are good. He just wants kids to know teachers aren't gonna hold their hands in college. He expects you to be big girls and boys. He is very sarcastic and sometimes comes off as an @$$ but generally professors do that. He's a smart dude though and overall a good guy.

I had him for Freshmen Seminar, and he was very strict about attendance and class preparedness. He seemed to take his obsession with those things too far, though. He would have several "talks" with us that lasted the whole class period and even sent us an email about how we were all bad students. So, a little dramatic.

Dr. Silver is one of my favorite teachers at Appalachian. He is hard and his syllabus look really bad but don't let that scare you off. Dr. Silver is an amazing teacher. Prior to this class I hated history, now I actually enjoy it. Take his class if you can! You will have to study and take time to write papers but its worth it. (2 exams. 2 papers.)
