Comment:

Dr. Teipen is a great man! Very passionate about teaching students. His tests are pretty difficult if you don't study enough. If your class is a 50min one, expect your hand to be cramping at the end of each test. Nonetheless, I think a lot of people are scared of him because of his tests, but please don't fret. He is pretty lenient if you guess.

Comment:

Dr. Teipen is awesome! He is very different from other professors, and at first his lectures seem disorganized, but as you get used to them they're a lot of fun. I learned so much in this class, and it was definitely worth it. Be prepared to read a lot, though. Tests aren't terrible if you study and know vocab. He expects participation.

I liked Intro to Islam, but you will have to work hard. You read a lot, and it is probably a good idea to keep up with this readings and talk in class, or he might give pop quizzes. There were only a few grades, but if you meet with him for help and about papers it will only help your grade. Get ready to memorize stuff for the final and midterm!

Comment:

Emailed him 3 or 4 times in a week about meeting with him and he never responded so I finally had to ask him in person to meet. Offers to proofread rough drafts for his papers but forgot about mine until past the due date. Very rude when I went to talk about preparing for the final, he talked over me the whole time and I just left. Super boring.

I would not recommend to take Intro to Islam. The lectures are very unorganized and poorly explained. Also poor engagement with the class, many students were uninterested. It WILL hurt your GPA, only 3 grades the whole year and he is a VERY tough grader. Tests are DEMANDING. Expects you to know a lot about Christianity just b/c you attend Furman.

He's very knowledgeable about his subject and tries to enstill that passion in his students. I would definitely recommend him as a good teacher, but if he feels the class isn't doing the readings, he'll give you a pop quiz. That's just my quick Teipen warning. Also, he has a very German sense of humor.

Comment:

The only good thing I can say is that he is really passionate about the topic and and is humorous at times. However the lectures are unorganized, and he sorta expects you to already know a good deal on Abrahamic religions in general even though it is a into class. Only 3 grades all semester and this class just doesn't help your GPA. Take another.

Really great teacher and fun guy. Lectures are interesting and he really knows a lot about his field and grades fair on tests. Read the texts and remember key terms and you will do fine. He talks really cool also with his accent! One of my favorite teachers so far at Furman!

This class was the worst class I have ever taken. It was so boring and such a waste of time. Not only was the class awful but so was the professor. He is so unorganized, never offers help and makes you feel awful. Insulting a student is just uncalled for in my eyes. Be prepared to have 2 or 3 grades all semester. Worst professor at Furman.

Absolutely terrible class. Teipen seems more interested in studying the content himself than teaching it to students. Showing up was a complete waste of time. I would strongly discourage anyone from willingly taking REL-125 w/ Teipen.

Nice guy but lectures are disorganized. Often scribbles (illegibly) a random arabic word on the board and hopefully you can get the meaning down before he moves on. A good bit of reading but it's not absolutely essential. His tests aren't terrible if you know every arabic word that he scribbled on the board. A fair grader though.

Really good professor/person! Take really good notes because the test is based on ID's and topics discussed in class. An occasional ID might be included from the readings. Participate in class, and always check moodle for occasional reader responses! He's great.

He is very nice and helpful. The books though are useless don't even bother reading them. ALL his tests are from his lecture!!!! KNOW DEFINITIONS, AND DATES WELL! Videos are also not on tests. Know basic topics that you discuss in class a lot because that most likely will be the 2 essay questions. Skim through FU moodle reading that may be just 1

He's a very, very nice man--really easy to talk to if you are having trouble in class. He's hilarious and is very understanding. However, I found it nearly impossible to make an A. Know the material very well for the tests and you'll make an easy B--but he puts a few really hard questions in there that will confuse you even if you studied a lot.

Dr Teipen is a very nice man but he can be pretty boring. I did enjoy his accent and the funny way that he says some words... it made the boring moments bareable. You have to take a lot of notes and sometimes he gives a lot of very scattered information which you have to try and make sense of. Tests are from the notes, so know them!

His lectures aren't terribly interesting, but if you sit by someone you know you can both laugh at his accent. The tests aren't that hard if you know everything on the study guides. Most of the reading is pointless.

Knows his stuff as well as anyone and really loves to teach. Sweet German accent and hilarious little beanie hat that he wears all the time make him just a funny guy overall. Must study and enjoy the material to get an A, and must have a talkative, light-hearted class willing to joke with him in order to have a good experience though.
