Took the class in my last semester thinking it would be fun. Way too much work and time. Unless youre an art major, be prepared. Very unprofessional and disrespectful. He only likes his specific form of art and has boring lectures. Didn't learn my name until the 10th week. In the critique you have to have a purpose for everything. Take another GE

This class is a lot of work!! I am not an Art major but I like ceramics a lot. My only problem was trying to get his attention durring class. You litterally have to hunt him down. But I did and it paid off. Dont take this class if you are planning on missing class though because you wont pass.

Dave is great. Odd sense of humor at first, but a fun guy and willing to help with anything as long as you ask. Intro Ceramics is easy to do well in if you care: take it seriously and keep up with your artwork. Dave likes art with a message; avoid the words cute and functional. Stop working and listen when he lectures! Show up, he takes roll!

Dave is a great guy and ceramics was always a blast to go to. He spends a lot of time lecturing and expects you to listen to what he has to say. As long as you put in effort and try to make something, you will get a good grade. Dave really tries to help his students, the people that gave him low grades obviously didn't put in the effort to try.

Comment:
If you're not an art major, lie. If Dave thinks you are, he will treat you like his best friend. Lectures are boring and scatter-brained. He gives you very little help on anything, and often resorts to yelling at students if they have questions. Basically, he's fairly disrespectful and not very professional. All non-art majors should avoid.

Constantly insulted my work because I like to make stuff that's "cute." "Cute" is an insult to him. And don't make anything with a purpose! It should be ART.

Dave is one of those professors that never leaves the classroom; he dedicates all of his time to his students. His interest & knowledge in ceramics and sculpture is deeper than anyone else I know-a student is able to ask almost any question about art or technique & count on getting the answer. He is also funny, easygoing, & easy to approach!

Dave is an amazing teacher and person. He loves his work and has loads of knowledge to pass down if you can handle admitting you don't know everything. If you are insecure, or can't handle being given an honest critique, don't waste Dave's time by taking the class. OTHERWISE, DO NOT MISS!!!

people who don't take their work seriously are the ones who end up not liking the class simply because dave is passionate about art and wants you to grow as an artist. the only reason someone would bash dave is because they don't know a good thing when it slaps them in the face. respect him.

If you're interested in the subject, he is a good teacher. He grades a lot on passion for your work, but if you aren't interested you won't do so well. His laugh is entertaining although the lectures are kind of drawn out. Don't buy the book.

Ilove Dave's class!! He knows his stuff and is willing and able to share;he makes it easy for non art majors to enjoy his class as well. If you're into science he can share the chemistry involved in ceramics, if you're artistic he can show you amazing possibilities for your work; take this class.

dave is the coolest teacher that chapman has. he is the only reason that i have stayed at chapman & became an art major. he challenges the class to think critically about art & the art making process.
