A very nice guy and teacher. Has a very impressive and expansive knowledge of the Aleutians so he is the perfect person to teach this class. It was never a class that I felt was a burden to go to since the content was great so while he is worth taking just know his grading is not the easiest but not impossible.

He assigns readings outside of the textbook and hands out lots of handout sheets. He does go one tangents but overall his message of what he wants you to know is clear. He is helpful outside of the classroom. He will help you on tests but only if he can tell if you know what you want to say. Great teacher but not an easy A.

Be prepared to READ! He has reading assignments for each test. DO NOT MISS THEM! If you can read and memorize facts, you should do ok. The tests are hard! No homework so study hard for those tests. He openly admits to playing favorites and will make you feel STUPID for asking questions. Good Luck

Veltre made Anthropology interesting! He has a dry humor but cracks jokes alot! All tests are based on textbook and class lectures, so pay attention and READ!! Easy to pass if you're willing to do the work :) Highly recommend!

I took his class and I was disappointed in the way he taught it. For a 200 lvl class, the professor taught it like an advanced course. The exams were very hard(lots of memorizing and maps) but no matter how long I studied or how many hours I spent looking at the maps, I didn't pass a single test. He needs to rethink the way he teaches this class.

Interesting class however, it may seem easy but the tests are definintley NOT! Be sure to study all the notes, books, and study guide material or else you will be sorely mistaken on how welll you might do on the test. Tests cover in class videos, as well as an extra book that you have to write two papers on.

Seems like a great guy OUTSIDE of the classroom. Honestly want to know how good he is, take a look at the numbers 28 of 40 ppl failed the 2nd exam, about 19 of 40 failed the 3rd...IT'S IN THE NUMBERS! Asks questions but no answers are EVER good enough! Would not recommend.

I took Natives of Alaska with Veltre and I enjoyed it so much I wound up getting an Anthro. minor. I went on to take as many of the Anthro classes that I could from Veltre. His classes are interesting, tests are fair and he goes above and beyond to help you. He has been my favorite professor at UAA. I would and do recommend him to everyone!

A very friendly, approachable teacher. He made the subject fun and very interesting. You could tell he enjoyed the subject of Archeology because he seemed to get excited often when talking about it. I hear he is leaving after this year though, so if you get any chance to get a class with him, grab him! The best professor I've had all year.

He teaches the class like everyone is challenged or in elementry school but he doesnt keep up that lobadomized trend on the tests. He will smash you on tests if you think that you can answer at the level he teaches.

Prof. Veltre was a very nice guy. If you want to do well in the class, keep up with the readings and STUDY the study guide! A lot of the questions from his study guide are on the tests. Come to class because the notes you take are helpful, and the movies you watch are part of your tests as well. He grades on a curve which is good for everyone.

Doug is my advisor and I have only good things to say about him. Talks about interesting things, listens to students and tries to be helpful. Last semester he organized a conference, gave two papers, and taught classes! He teaches for the slowest students in his classes- so if you like fast paced classes -try Langdon instead!
