At first, she was really strict, and I guess it worked cause it scared a lot of us into actually trying. She ended up giving everyone A's on the essays and lightening up the course work towards the last month or two. As long as you participate, print the work, and show up to class you should be good.

Film Studies is a great class for anyone interested in foreign films. The class is discussion-heavy so be sure to speak up. There's a couple essays with peer evaluation and Sommers gives good feedback on the final paper.

Very strict with the assignments. Extremely tough on grades. Very evident she is sexist. She barely confronts the non participating girls in class, always asks the quiet boys though. Do not make my mistake.

Gives good feedback on essays, but is tough in class. Participation matters a lot, and it is important to do the homework because she will often call on students at random.

Dangerous texts was an interesting and thought provoking class. However, if you don't read the books, it will be obvious. I highly suggest this class if you love reading and don't mind doing it for homework. One of the most impactful classes I have taken at RIT, as it got me interested in Russian Literature.

Horrible professor. Made a kid stand up and tell the class why he didn't do his homework. Tells you to email her to set up an office hour so she can go over papers, doesn't reply to emails. Doesn't use mycourses either so you never know what your grade actually is..

Her class was hard at first, but now I am eager to hear the lectures she has arranged for class. She has sparked a deeper interest in detailed reading and interpretation for me. We really brings the text to life in a new way. She'll make you think but the thoughts you produce are brilliant! She is accessible and open to different interpretations.

She loves the subject, do the reading. Generally good, only annoying thing is that if you answer wrong, which is every time, she gets angry that you "must not have read", but if you stop answering because you're sick of her telling you that, she also gets angry that you "must not have read".

The lessons themselves were mostly open discussion, which I thought was a bad idea. It didn't really teach me how to write as much as the concepts expressed in the readings(which should be done). The homework was a lot of writing but wasn't too bad. Sommers herself was kind of insufferable. She was arrogant and se*ist at times. Avoid if possible

Professor Sommers is an excellent instructor - had her for writing seminar. While she is a strict essay grader and will usually not give above an A- the first time, she lets you rewrite your first two essays out of three so that it's very difficult to get below a B in the class as long as you show up and do your work. Highly recommended professor.

The main point to be stressed regarding this professor is that you have to have an interest in the course material to have any success in the class. This is not a course to be taken as a random place filler, and is meant for those who enjoy reading and discussing literature. As long as you voice your OWN opinion, you'll do fine. Class is great.

Extremely strict but if you do your work then she is very nice and the class is very educating. I've really enjoyed reading books and the discussions in the classroom. Just show respect and do your work then you will do just fine in her classes.

Had her for AE. There was...an overwhelming amount of reading that had to be done. This week, she assigned 50 pages to be done on Thursday (assignment given Tuesday). She can be incredibly rude if there's something you're doing she doesn't like. Regardless of intention or not. I wouldn't recommend.

She's a great professor! But her AE is a HEAVY-reading course which means you have to read five books! Also you HAVE to read them before she questions you! If you don't, she'll give you a quiz! She can be tough if you don't read!

her classes are heavily discussion based with only a couple major assignments. do your readings! don't even try to pretend you did them because she will scan your soul & KNOW. she seems harsh but she's actually really kind & forgiving if you let her know what's going on.

Hard work is required, you must read, and actually think. She expects you to have your homework done, and be ready for class. She's tough around the edges, but do what you're told and use a lot of quotes in your essays and you'll be fine.

Great engaging professor. She expects quite a bit of work and is a stickler if you don't do it, but the assignments are usually worthwhile and interesting. She grades fairly and gives good feedback. Definitely take a class with her if you get the chance.
