Comment:
If you're trying to genuinely think about why/how modernity operates and the problems with binaries and representation inherent in anthro (or just think in general) take a class with Mentore! He's probably the most thoughtful professor I've had. Invest in the class by reading everything before and reflecting outside class - this is real education !

His classes are geared toward anthropology majors like myself, but they can be rewarding IF you pay attention and listen. The theory he discusses in class is often high level anthropological theory, critical theory, and feminist theory, and if you don't have a vested interest, you may not follow. Inspired me to pursue anthropology

I absolutely loved Mentore! Yes, he is hard to follow. I noticed that people that were geared towards STEM majors and that type of mindset struggled, but if you're open to new ideas and philosophical thought, take his class!! All exams are 45 minutes written essays and you just need to show your thought process and why you think that way.

Comment:
This class is just way too abstract and a lot of it sounded like BS. Mentore is really hard to follow; for every 100 things he says, 20 make sense. It seemed like the anthro majors in the class really liked him, but if you're just looking for a "different" class, don't take this one. so much reading and the discussions in class don't make sense

I liked Mentore overall. He really brings to life an important perspective that he stems from his own experience. I felt he was too defensive in class discussion and often would try to argue the point without understanding it a hundred percent. Regardless I'll advise people to take his class on exchange - no regrets.

Heard about him since being a first year. Now taking his class as a fourth year, anthro and comm school major. Really great how he integrates business practices and anthro. Super though for non anthro ppl and first years... should be a 3000 level class.

Mentore actually wrote on my final exam, "You have no place in academia, your writing is horrendous. My suggestion to you is to try something different" For 4 years I doubted myself until I enrolled in a MSc Environmental Science, Cambridge. Top honors. I would most definitely NOT recommend this course to any undergraduate out there.

Horrible professor with a horrible ego to match. Biased against whites, americans, greeks, UVA, etc. Final was not something that anyone in the class could have prepared for. Strongly suggest NOT taking this class...but I did get an A- so if you can deal with his horrible class it might be worth it for the grade. Do the readings.

Interesting topic but reading is definitely required to do well and must pay attention in lecture because material is very abstract. Great professor who really loves what he does.

This should definitely not be a 2000 level class. I went to almost every class, and took notes, but he tends to speak as if he's talking to a bunch of Anthro majors, which I'm definitely not. Also very unclear on what it is he wants in papers... take this only if you're really interested in anthropology.

George Mentore is a God. His class changed my life and if I could take a class with him in every subject I would. For those of you looking for easy classes, why do you even go to UVA?Of course his classes are not easy, but if they were, what would be the point? He will push you to the brink edge of insanity, and literally rock your world.

This class was unbelievably hard, and I attended every single class. Even though the class is a 200 level course, it is proctored as though it is on a 300 level. The readings are super long every night. Oh yeah, plus the final exam is worth 50% of your grade. Chew on that!!! Unless you are an Anthropology major...Do not take this course!

It was a big mistake to take this class. I attended almost all the lectures and could not follow most of them. The class is very hard. The semester is over and I barely know what he was trying to teach. He is always willing to answer questions, but it is pointless since most of the times his answers are even more confusing.

Professor Mentore introduced me to the study of anthropology. He's absolutely brilliant, and while arrogant, is a spectacular teacher. He doesn't teach from the book, but rather teaches you how to extrapolate the ideas throughout your studies.

Mentore is a fantastic professor who constantly introduces challenging and provocative concepts. Anyone who says Mentore's lectures are unrelated to the text clearly didn't read the text or couldn't hack it. Sure, George is egotistical, but as a great anthropologist and lecturer he has earned that right. Take any of his classes-very worth it!

Right, the rest of you are lazy if you dont see Mentore in his true light. If you want to hide in the back of the class, forget it. If you want to talk about his "ego", respect the man for his right to have one. He got me into grad school, showed me South America for what it truly is and was a friend as well. beyond that, he's a drop dead gorgeous.

Professor Mentore is such an inspirational teacher The brilliance that he shows throughout his lectures gives students both a challenge and a desire to meet that challenge. He is such a great thinker and I recommend him to all students who want to be able to think for themselves through the explication of culture, society, and the individual.
