Old school deep thinking professor. If you're not a thinker or you don't do lectures will, he's not your teacher. Great lecture!!!

Just basically a therapy session. You could probably attend half the lectures or fewer and still do quite well in the class. Nice guy. Only downside is how quietly he speaks, makes it hard in larger classes.

If you are a hippie and like to talk about 'thinking' for 4 hours a week, then this is a class for you. BORING No lectures, just random group discussions. Only a couple of easy essays and no structured lecture.

Very easy class. Graded only on a final and a midterm, each are 6 page essays. I rarely showed up, b.s'ed the essays and got a B-. Needleman knows his stuff but I could barely hear him. If one of his aides subs for him, get the heck out of there.

Needleman's a great teacher. He's so knowledgable about the subject and you can tell it still interests him after all these years. He speaks rather softly though so do sit up front. There's virtually no work to do, just two papers to write. A very interesting class.

Incredibly BORING class. He really knows his stuff though. Virtually no work to do, besides reading and thinking about mystics. Probably very interesting for Philosophy majors. Two big papers to write, with no guidelines..

I graduated 10 years ago and his classes are constantly on my mind. Traditional Don of SFSU, published, polished, intelligent, caring. Don't hesitate to take the class, plan on studying, sit up front, prepare to be changed thinker.

Needleman is amazing. He's insightful and understanding, although somewhat monotone at times. If you pay attenion and listen carefully you get a lot more out of it. The effort is worth it. He's extrememly intelligent and a very nice person.
