I loved taking this class with Professor O'Brien. The films/documentaries were always really enjoyable and informative. I really got into the discussions because they were always really relevant, plus he made sure to make everyone feel included and intelligent. There's one paper and it's very easy. Pay attention so you know what will be on the test

Great professor who helps students learn types of media writing such as commercials, scripts etc. Many hw assignments are group based, so get google drive. The book not used, just helpful to know and is better for a Film 113 class. This class may replace story development, so be prepared to write scripts weekly, in groups and on own a short one.

I liked his film selection and he was easy to understand. You have to study for exams, which are based on reading mostly, but not much homework other than reading. I liked how he talks to the students and has dialogue with them instead of just lecture. Some sm. group work. I recommend this great professor unless you are the type who is absent.

Tests are a bit hard and assignment sheets are very important to turn in. He is patient and likes to explain things, but you should take notes of everything he says for the test. The movies he showed us were mostly very cool and led to great discussions in class. He's very laid back but this class is not an easy A. Some reading required.

Prof. O'Brien is the best teacher I ever had at El Camino and my major isn't even film. Took 101 class and was able to get into his Italian Cinema course. 10/10 class we not only learned about the films of Italy we learned about its; culture, geography, history, and current events .

Showing up and participating are a big part of your grade. Don't be afraid to ask questions because he loves to explain! His tests are easy if you pay attention in class and take notes. He cares about his students and isn't a tough grader. Just a very nice, caring person.

I took Prof. O'Brien's class the summer before my senior year of high school. Because of this class, I decided to double major, with one of my majors being in Cinema Studies. Prof. O'Brien truly goes above and beyond in accessibly after hours, selecting immersive content, and will reward you if you put in a solid effort. Could not recommend enough!

He is a nice person but his grading is NOT. My major is Film and I never worked so hard to get at least C. He grades 75% Tests (3 in total including final) and 25% Analysis sheets in class. Prof. O'Brien, you should change your grading method. How can you expect a student to know your points of view in a multiple choice test? We dont think alike!

Took this class over the winter. One of the best teachers I've ever had and hope to take more of his classes. I expected to watch movies ever class but we only watched couple; Modern Times, Citizen Kane, Breathless, The Graduate, and The Bike Thief. All really good moves. Really goes into the history of film and it's invention.

I had O'Brien's Intro to Film, Production 1, and Editing classes. Editing is just Production with slightly different time frames. Each taught me a lot, both technical and artistic, though it's luck what group members you work with. Intro to Film is a boring waste of time. Just watching movies more than analyzing them. Do credit by exam if you can.

funny he said on the first day of class how only like 3 students got an A and majority got C's well guess what? i'm now beyond sure it was not the students fault but his fault. He's really nice but just doesn't know how to grade if that makes sense. He gives 100 question exam and just expects you to pass and that's how you get your grade.

DO NOT take this class if you are not a film major. This is not a lecture class he leaves it open discussion and then gives you 100 question exam on things that were never told. Like how can you know whats important if there's no real lecture? I'm suppose to think that a students opinion is important? study guide forget understanding it.

I took this class over the summer thinking it would be an easy A for a summer course where all we do is watch and analyze movies but I was wrong! Do NOT take this in the summer. Tests are 100 questions and he has a study guide for all of them but only gives you two days to study for the exam with it. You must be a good listener and note taker.

this summer class is ridicously boring and hard 100 question test not down for a summer class. he's a cool teacher and all but makes this class way too tough for summer class if your looking to get an A

O'Brien is a awesome teacher. Not only did he teach me academics, but he really set me up for a future in the filmmaking industry. His tests are hard, so you need to know your stuff. But as a professional in the industry he can really set you up with what you need. And the tests are all information you need for this industry.

Enjoyed his class! No book needed, watch films every day but there are also journals involved, not too hard though. No homework and only 2 tests the midterm an final and for thefinal he basically gives you the final to take home and study. Loved this class and I learned how to disect a film. TAKE THE CLASS!!

His class is easy to pass, but not easy to get an a in. His tests are a little bit annoying (100 q's), but repetitive. Very nice person and knows what he is talking about. I found the class to be extremely boring, but he helped me learn how to dissect films. no role, so attendance is optional. but overall, i would recommend him.
