I am only bothering to review because I saw so many negative ones and was astonished. In my experience taking several classes with Lisa she is extremely fair, open-minded and interesting. I enjoy her classes and I have had no trouble with grades, she is extremely helpful in office hours and encourages deep thought.

She is very kind but she is a very hard and subjective marker. Other then a few obvious mistakes (which collectively did not reduce my grade that much) I would often wonder why I lost marks. She hands out a rubric for all assignments but it doesn't really mean anything. One of those classes where your grade does not reflect the quality of your work

2nd year course, so not difficult. Helpful in guiding discussion. Approachable. Utilize office hours and stick to deadlines. Flexible with good reason.

She demands you come to class but they are mind-numbing and only useful to hear her point of view. You will need to hear her point of view, though, because it is the only one that matters to her. If I could give 0 out of 5, I would.

She's a bit of a bully and I'm only reviewing here because I didn't know how to report her behavior to the school. If you feel like she doesn't like you or that maybe you should drop before the deadline (Even the smallest sense), I would recommend you do that. She really worked hard to make it difficult for me to succeed and made me feel unwelcomed

Lisa was alright. I often enjoy English classes and have always received an A, but not this time. She was a difficult marker. I tried to figure out what she wanted form me all semester, and I think I have figured out that she likes A LOT of examples for your arguments. There was just something missing for me in terms of inspiration or interest.

She was really nice and gave really good feedbacks. She was more than willing to listen to students' thoughts on all the work and very chill to talk to.

She is nice but she is not a fair marker. I really enjoy her amazing lectures and she is super nice. However, if you aim to earn high mark, please avoid her as well.

If you're taking ENGL146, do your best to get Lisa, the course was easy by english class standards, and Lisa is an incredible speaker; she chose really great readings and she really knows her stuff

Very kind and open to students' ideas, but definitely a tough marker. Only one full long essay to write, but counts for a lot. Did not enjoy a lot of the readings ie novel, but class discussions are engaging and open. She's careful not to load up during busy midterm and exam seasons as well.

For me Lisa made the class. She's incredibly charismatic, very intelligent and devoted to her subject. She'll often go off onto these seemingly unrelated tangents only to beautifully circle back to how its somehow related, doing so passively as if shes not even thinking. It's fascinating and keeps the lectures interesting. I hope to take her again

She is laid back and easy to talk to. Good sense of humour. I don't find Canadian literature that interesting, but she explains the concepts clearly. I found her to be a generous marker, crediting my ideas in places where my writing was admittedly sloppy and ideas poorly explained. Easy on the eyes too--no complaints!

In future I'll avoid any class that Dr. Chalykoff teaches. She lectures at a first year level (none of the information we looked should be new to 3rd/4th yr students) but is a surprisingly tough marker, especially if your ideas about a text are different than hers. Be warned that the 'hamburger essay' is the only structure she finds acceptable

If you dont agree with her interpretation, keep it to yourself. I've never met an English prof that is as closed minded to alternative interpretations as Lisa is.

She absolutely hated me but I got a pretty good mark. Didn't enjoy the class, it was dry and she does not encourage free thought nor contribution. Subject material was ok, easy enough read. Tell her what she wants to hear and you'll do great. Not much need to attend class either really, you'll learn very little from doing so. Sorry, but not great!

Lisa is a great prof and an amazing person. I have taken two classes with her and would take a dozen more! Mark my words, though, you will not coast in her classes; she's a tough marker. Attend all lectures, pay attention, read the novels (typical of any English class)and you will probably do well. Put in some serious time and you'll do great!

I loved this class and Lisa. She definitely knows what she is talking about. She challenges students but I found that I learned so much. I would take another class with Lisa in a second and I highly recommend her.
