Comment:
He is very interested in his subject and tells great stories from experience. He has his grad students grade his things which is awful, they grade things wrong and you have to get it corrected because Starr doesn't re grade them. Tests are very difficult, he's very unclear in lectures. He jumps around from topic to topic. Difficult to take notes.

Starr is a very good teacher, an expert in his field, and a likable person. You will probably learn a lot from this guy, but if you are only looking for a good grade, this is not the class for you. This is possibly the most difficult class I have ever taken, and it's not because the material is hard to comprehend. It's just the way he grades.

He claims that he is an environmentalist and that he believes in global warming, yet he flew to Cailfonia at least 3 times within the semester. He used an old school projector with pictures to lecture from and never used "now days technology." Had no way to keep updatgrades and I never knew where I stoin his class.

Starr above all else is a crowd pleaser. He attempts to make every student feel welcome and at times is afraid to tell students their flat wrong in class discussions. He has some extreme views but remains fairly open minded. You must READ the book, take notes, and participate to get an A/B in the class. Very helpful office hours.

Honestly, I learned very little of geography in this geography class. Dr. Starr is nice but he's also kind of hard to figure out academically. He says attendance matters when it doesn't and acts like his tests are easy when they're actually pretty hard. I wasn't expecting to pass this semester and still managed a C, though; take that as you will.

Environmental extremist. Preaches global warming (still, really?), America is bad, capitalism is bad. Tree hugger, makes things up (Commoner only created 4 laws of ecology, NOT 5).Rants and raves about politics in a geography class. Appears intelligent, but really he's just an ideological blowhard. Pass the class then forget every word he says.

His lectures are really good, but he's kind of a jerk. I saw him have more than a few temper-tantrums. He grades very harsh.

Overall, Dr. Starr is the best teacher I've had in my 3 semesters at SIUE. He grades based on a curve, which helps tremedously. His tests are not difficult if you study and do your best. You have to go to class and takes notes, though (why shouldn't you?). The material is very interesting and he is extremely smart. I definitely recommend the class.

He is a very hard teacher. I never got above a C on a test, but at the end he curves the grade to help out quite a bit. If you make progress through the semester he is pretty fair about grading. He knows what he is talking about, but his tests are ridiculously hard!

He's a good teacher, but very very harsh on grading. This class is super hard. If you take this class, make sure to talk about how much you love Al Gore and all his beliefs on global warming and how you'd like to kiss Gore on the cheek, and you'll get a better grade.
