Comment:
Anderson does not give clear instructions on what he expects in his papers. He does not give many opportunities to help grasp the texts by way of outside assignments. There is only the Discussion Board and the papers. It is impossible to follow the discussion board if you don't really understand the text, and he is horrible at answering questions.

Avoid his class at at cost! You have three five page papers to write, and a 12-13 page final paper. He does not use APA or MLA.. He has his own format, and grades harshly those who do not get it right. I am an "A" student. My GPA has gone down due to him and his odd grading. When he grades a paper it seems like he is getting you back for something.

Excellent course for those interested in Japanese history, art, literature, writing, philosophy and/or cultural understanding. Interesting reading, discussion and clear course assignments/expectations. Engage with the material and you will learn about this fascinating period in Japan. Some flexibility to follow personal, academic interests.

Rude teacher. Took online class and he refused to help me in emails. He demanded I go to office hours in person. WAY too much work in the class. About 25 pages of writing (two 5 page and a 12 page final) for a class that isn't writing.

Comment:
He is rude and expects far too much in writing ability considering this is NOT a writing class. It was difficult to know what he wanted from you and graded very harshly. Even if you are a good writer if you don't say what he wants to hear he will grade you down. Don't take his classes.

Fascinating, challenging reading and discussion topics. Excellent texts and optional reading lists provided. Expect to challenge yourself and your thinking. Strong writers and those interested in cultural understanding will do well. Top notch, fair professor will redirect, as needed- even academic types. That's necessary for growth. Appreciated.

Took the online course. Consists of posting 1 topic and 3 replies each week. A total of 3 (3-5 pg) papers due, and a long paper (8-12 pg) due at the end of the term. Professor can be intimidating and sometimes rude in responses, so it made me feel uneasy to contact him if I needed help. Easy class if you love to write.

He also teaches the Japanese culture classes which are online.. AND he's absolutely rude, and of no help. Reading the other ratings, I'm not surprised. Probably will fail this class. >:|

I'm a 3.85 student. This professor is terrible professor. He was not clear about papers. Refused to answer several emails asking for clarity on what he wanted for papers. If you have to take him agree with him, do not speak, do not think differently, do not correct him. He will unfairly grade you.

Don't offend him, or point out his mistakes, or he will fail you on all his papers. my GPA is 3.75 (senior w/many academic awards). My tests=A, papers=F. Talked to the dean, described my problem, & the dean named the teacher before I did. Anderson has a history of failing those who correct him (even if it's in the book). Just listen, don't speak.

One of my favorite teachers at OSU. He's funny and has a lot of great stories. There are four papers, but they are all easy and he doesn't grade them hard. There are weekly quizzes on the lectures and you don't even need the book. Take a class with this guy!

4 texts covered, 3 papers to write, that was it. Took this class online, you must read the books and write 6-8 pages double spaced, couldn't be more simple.

This professor was horrible. He was not open to outside views at all whatsoever. The class I took was online and it seemed his only interest was belittling anyone that he could. He also desired a very specific path for the class and anything outside of that path was not welcome. Do not take a class from this professor!

Amazing class! He made everything interesting, as long as you show up and take good notes you can get an A. The projects are easy (2 movies, 2 service visits) and didn't ever open the book. The teacher presented everything without taking sides so it made it easy to listen to and great to learn!

He was amazing! Best class I've taken at Oregon State. He presented a lot of information on a variety of religions and did so surprisingly without any bias. Easy to remember the lecture info, and never even cracked the book open. Two tests and 4 'projects' (2 movie reviews, 2 religious service visits). Overall great class

Great professor! Covers the controversial topic of religion w/o giving preference to any one tradition. A pretty easy A too. Go to class, take good notes, and study them before the tests. 2 multiple choice, non-cumulative exams mostly about vocab and people. Interesting & fun assignments: 2 movie reviews and 2 religious service visits.
