Comment:
Dr. Parkhurst is a joy to have as a professor. He is very nice, and clearly passionate about his job. The class is designed for you to write one big culminating paper, but you will write it in a few drafts and the grade you get on the last paper will be your grade for all drafts. There's a fairly significant amount of reading, but it is paced out.

I love Parkhurst! He is very passionate about anthropology so his lectures get carried away sometimes but it is easy to focus on because of his personality. Super easy class. No essays just 4 tests that are all open book open note. I suggest reading the books though because they can help you understand the content better and do better on the tests.

Parkhurst is one of the best professors I have had at UofL. He is challenging, but truly cares about and respects his students. He really loves it when you participate in class, even it if is simply saying "I don't get it." He is a bit wild, but this makes lectures fun! He listens to students and respects their ideas and questions.

Personally I didn't care for his class at all. If it weren't for his TA's I would have dropped the course. He doesn't respond to emails and talking with him after class is pointless

It's obvious that he's passionate about Anthropology and will do whatever he has to do to help students understand. Only 4 tests and 1 essay to determine your grade so don't slack. If you attend lecture then you won't need to read the books because he covers all the content.

Dr. Parkhurst is great! He is really funny and he makes it hard not to pay attention in class due to his excitement and interest in the topic. However, I don't think I would have made it through the class with passing grade without the Teaching assistant, because his tests were tough! I would recommend him, though.

Parkhurst is a really smart guy. He is very passionate about Anthropology and tries his best to get you to love it as much as he does. His lectures are horribly long and he rambles off ideas that pop in his head so most of the time you leave class confused. If you want to do well, read read read read everything he assigns. Tests arent too bad.

After taking this class I'm still not exactly sure what I learned or what the point of the class was other than dealing with a puzzling paper. The papers are tough and require a lot of attention and it is tough trying to use the sources he forces you to use for your paper regardless of your topic. Get ready to have a stressful semester!

Tough class! The texts were difficult to read and understand, but he did an excellent job explaining and clarifying. If you put a lot into the class, he will make things easier through out the semester (he canceled one of our papers). Overall, great class and I learned a ton. Take 508 with him if possible!

Parkhurst is a very hard teacher. There were many times I left the lectures and had to google items he lectured about. He does, however, offer any help that you may need. Sometimes his quizes and test can be a bit tough, but if you read an attend ALL the class you should be able to do pretty decent. Btw, there is a bunch of reading assignments too.

Took his Iberian Culture course in Portugal, and learned a whole lot. He's a very exciting and insightful professor, and chose some very interesting journal articles and other readings for the course.

One of the worst teachers that I have had in my college career. He is a okay lecturer and loves the subject, but his tests are ridiculous. This is a entry level class, yet the classs average for the first test was a D and a C for the second. His tests are full of errors, he changes 5-6 questions and answers on the test DURING the test.

the lectures were energetic and interesting, but unfortunately the tests were related in no way shape or form to the material covered in the class. All tests come straight from the book, and the text choices are anything but interesting. I would not recommend this course unless you were a glutton for abuse and frustration.

Parkhurst is a great lecturer, he really gets excited about the material and gets the class involved in discussing it. The books he chose were, for the most part, interesting and pertinent to the course. He gives useful feedback on papers, and is willing to stray off topic to deepen discussion. I can't recommend him highly enough.

I had Dr P. for Cultural Anthropology. The lectures are fun and he is energetic and exciting but he has HARD tests and you HAVE to read the book to do well. He is fair but gives no points other then 4 test. No papers.

His tests are extremely difficult and rare. He will ask you very specific questions from the book and even if you have done the reading, you need to make sure you memorize it word for word. He is afraid of someone memorizing past test so he will not let you get them back, but the extra credit (the curve) is based on questions from those test.
