Worth noting: Negative comments were from a time when the work ethic of band members was notably poorer. Dr. Diem wants nothing more than for the band to be the PRIDE of Minnesota. If you want to have fun and improve the organization as you can, Diem will make sure you not only do just that, but that you have the best band experience of your life.

Dr. Diem is a professional who knows what he is talking about. He is clear in what he wants out of his students and challenges us to work for what we want. He doesn't let us slack off. He also makes this class fun and interesting, even though some of the material is a bit dense.

Treats us like we're children. Resorts to using "funny" faces, gestures, and noises to get his point across. Seems to care more about making people laugh than making music. Finds a joke that makes people laugh and repeats it. Over and over...nice enough to maybe not mature enough for college band

It's obvious that the negative comments on here are based on personal problems with Diem. In my experience he's great. He can be tough, but it's usually warranted because students think they can slack off. Working hard is what makes band fun, and that what Diem encourages.

Fun conductor, and enjoys getting to know kids. I haven't seen him playing favorites and he's just an overall fun guy and enjoyable to work with and talk to.

Very tempermental, and definitely has his favorite students, like a lot of profs. The only difference is he shows it and spreads gossip about students he doesn't like as much. In the marching band he seems to be more interested in entertaining himself and the band than the fans and community he is supposed to serve. He's no Luckhardt.

He plays favorites and enjoys making you feel stupid if he doesnt like you. Has a hot temper and makes a big deal about small things. He enjoys what he does but be prepared for him to tell you that he would rather be at home than teaching you. and if you dont understand something the first time, he blames the entire band instead of himself eveytime

Extremely unprofessional, plays favorites, spreads rumors. Uses gossip and passive aggressive tactics to manipulate students. As a 4 year member of band, and 3 years as a section leader, my respect for his authority and ability diminished each year. If you truly care about excelling in music and performance, you will have a hard time with him.

Diem is awesome. He genuinely cares about all 300 of the students, and he really truly does want to know all of our names. He can be strict or a little hot tempered, but if you're not talking while at attention and you're doing what you should be, you won't get yelled at. He expects the best in all aspects, and that includes discipline.
