Comment:
The course is just two hours of Walter rambling and intruding on his students' personal lives. If anything, the class made me dumber. He targets students of color & makes comments about things like wanting to "return" his adopted his baby (a child of color) because she was "so hairy." However, it's easy and he genuinely cares about his students.

Alvarez is caring, but not interesting. Deadass his class put me to sleep, if you aren't a Silver Social Work student, DO NOT TAKE this class. Easy A but boring as hell. Group project at the end too and exams are open-book online via Classes.

Dr. Alvarez has a lot of real life experience in the profession, and genuinely cares about the wellbeing of his students. However, the class doesnt afford much time for discussion beyond his occasional asking of (somewhat personal) questions. The class is overall more about listening to his opinions and ideas than forming your own.

Comment:
I have mixed feelings about Professor Alvarez. He is an incredibly caring guy, but does have a tendency to go on long winded rants. The source material is boring and the professor doesn't help. He is the type of guy I would want to have a conversation with, but not necessarily to have as a professor.

Comment:
This course is easy to get an A in if all work is submitted , but the vast majority of the course is lecture based. His lectures however were pointless , extremely boring and seemed to last forever. I would recommend a different professor if you want to actually learn something. He is exceptional at making the subject of social work dull and vapid.

A very human and humane professor. Very understanding with your personal difficulties. Easy A. Open book exams. No long papers. A very enjoyable class experience. Solid choice professor for Intro to Social Work. Very knowledgeable about his field too because he is a practicing social worker & part-time professor at NYU.

Loved this Professor. The work is heavy and attendance is definitely mandatory, if you do all the work and participate you should get an A. Overall great class.

Amazing Professor. His lectures are really interesting and he really cares about his students. In some of the reviews people list it as an easy A, but I'd say it's only an easy A if you actually show up to the class/do all the work/participate, otherwise you WILL fail. If you seem to be struggling just talk to him and he's very helpful.

Walter Alvarez is incredibly sweet, caring, and thoughtful. He truly cares about his students (and often brings in snacks). Plus, he is a very very lenient grader! Easy As on papers and only gives take home exams.

Spends the entire class rambling on about his experiences and dominates class discussions. He often makes little sense. Easy class but very boring, despite interesting readings.

I had him for my DROP class. The class itself is set up to be very interesting but he went on 1 hour+ tangents every day and so we never reached the material. Shame, since the readings were interesting. He cuts off students once they get going in a discussion to avoid any sore subjects (which I think is completely ridiculous). Would not recommend.

I took this professor for my Diversity, Racism, Oppression and Privilege class. Very easy. He talks A LOT. Discussion will help your grade. Gets kind of boring if you have him for a two hour class. He works with the classes schedule for assignments. Midterm and final papers.

Really personable person, but talks WAY too much. Classes are discussion-based, no real structure. Whenever he encourages students to talk, he cuts into what they are saying. (Short attention span?) He also digresses A LOT- Sometimes I leave the class thinking "What was today's topic?" "EASY A" FOR SURE, but you won't learn much.

I love Dr. Alvarez. Definitely take his classes if you can! I appreciate that he focuses on his students learning the material through discussion as opposed to ridiculous amounts of reading. He is fair and extremely entertaining.

The nicest man ever! I am not going to lie, sometimes class could drag on, but Dr. Alavrez is a caring and very nice person. We had one homework assignment, one test, and a final presentation. Dr. Alaverz rocks!

The teacher is a really, really nice person with quite an impressive amount of knowledge, but a really, really ineffective teacher. The class is an easy A, but I feel that I learned very little.

This was the least work I've ever done for a class. He's a really nice man, but I didn't learn a single thing in the class (and I did all the reading and assignments). Do extra credit if it's offered to secure you get an A. He likes to go off on tangents for hours of classtime.
