He's just not good; there's no other way to put it. His lecture slides are pretty much useless, so if you miss class you're doomed. Exam includes identifying 10 passages by name/author/date, so if you haven't done the reading you're going to fail. Not a very engaging lecturer either; he treats the class like they're animals (clapping/yelling at us)

Helpful until the exam, that was the most difficult exam I've ever had the misfortune of writing. Was not clear on what would be on the exam, tested on specifics about over 40 different articles. Lectures were difficult to listen to and hella confusing; he jumped around a lot.

Dr. Bongie is a very knowledgable and enthusiastic teacher. He led our seminar in a very engaging manner. His quizzes are difficult but overall his marking is fair, and he provides tons of constructive criticism. By the end of the semester if you have participated then you will come out with a good mark.

As someone has previously commented, this professor needs to change his extremely condescending attitude (to the point where it is rude) towards students. He is also unhelpful and hard to make an appointment with. I am not sure why he is still teaching.

I'm not really sure what's wrong with the lot of you, but this prof is fantastic. Perhaps you can't appreciate someone who pushes and challenges you, but if you work hard, he helps you to develop intellectually and succeed in your work. Take his courses if you are prepared to think for yourself and not be spoon fed.

Bongie's a great prof. people dont like him because his class pushes you and makes you use your brain more than any other english class will; plus its more than just the textbook it's always about the rest of what the world's made up of as well. again you have to think.and i never agreed with his opinions and it was never a problem!

Figured it's time someone defended this prof. He is one of the greatest instructors I've ever had. My close-reading, writing, & conceptual skills matured so much under him. He is neither for the unintelligent nor the unmotivated. He will push you with challenging discussions & assignments, but with perseverance, you will grow. Also a great guy

I have nothing good to say about this prof. He is arrogant but very insecure about his own intelligence because he constantly undermines people who have different ideas from his own. He even checks this site to find out what people are saying about him! His lectures are unstructured and hard to follow, and his expectations are never made clear.

He's a good teacher, and this course is interesting, but the amount of work was almost double what it was in my other courses. Another thing is that his marking scheme requires a math degree to figure out, because it has something to do with getting ranked...so the 80 on your paper is not necessarily an 80?? Overall an enjoyable class otherwise

This prof is passionate about his teaching and keenly interested in the material, and although he's demanding, he's also rewarding. If you want to read a lot, learn a lot, and heighten the sophistication of your literary analysis, he's your man! Slacker students, Beware.

A great teacher! Helen was not his fault; she was assigned to him - he didn't pick her! Great sense of humour, passionate about his job and cares a great deal for his students learning. I would recommend his classes to anyone.
